Map. Lithograph. 21 1/8" x 26 5/8". Incredible orthographic projection map of the world during World War II. Centered on the 35th parallel north and 170th meridian east, the map shows much of the Pacific Ocean north of the equator, as well as many Pacific Islands. A small orthographic projection showing the other half, namely South America, Africa, and Antarctica, sits in the lower right corner. The legend in the lower left explains the color coding of the countries according to their affiliation as of August 1, 1942: Allies, Occupied by Allies, Pro-Ally, Axis, Occupied by Axis, Pro-Ais, and Neutrals. Note below says "These classifications are in some cases necessarily arbitrary." Additionally, the legend explains Great Circle Routes, distances by sea and air, and city sizes. Down the far right side of the page is a Radial Scale meant to be cut off and aligned on the map to measure distance in statute miles. The limitation of the orthographic projection is explained in the upper left corner of the sheet, below the title. The text on the right hand side of the sheet elaborates on the title "Pacific Arena," noting the geopolitical importance of the distinct fronts of the war - the Japanese strategy and American opportunity.
