Parchment-backed Cockerell marbled boards. Edition limited to 400 copies, printed at the Black Vine Press by Harold Seeger and Albert Sperisen; this copy with the book-label of Evan Gill, his pencilled note on the front free endpaper and inscribed by the author on the blank facing the title-page, "Inscribed reluctantly (on account of my matter) to Evan Gill London June 1959": loosely inserted a presentation typed letter signed to Gill from Albert Serisen, 1p. 8vo, San Francisco, 24 April 1959, and a news-cutting of the Times Literary Supplement's review, 25 September 1959. "This is a 'pretty' book," writes Albert Sperisen, who graduated from bibliophilic advertising executive to librarian of the Book Club of California. "But I do not apologize for it. I tried to make an honest book - something in fitting with Morison's directness and honesty." The TLS voices reservations. Its anonymous reviewer - who, history reveals, was none other than John Carter - opens: "Mr. Morison . . . is described in Mr. Carter's introduction to this rather bleakly designed little book as 'the man who is as much at home in New York and Chicago - and soon would be in San Francisco - as in London or Cambridge.' It is, indeed, . . . entirely natural that the publication which coincided with [Mr. Morison's] seventieth birthday, earlier this year, should emanate from one of the most civilized cities in the world, which by some accident he has apparently never visited . . . It is also entirely characteristic that the work under notice, while its subject-matter is authoritatively set in historical perspective, should deal with a development in printing technique and typographic design which is still in its infancy; one, moreover, which will surely outmode mechanically, economically, and perhaps aesthetically, those 400 years of fine printing from Gutenberg though William Morris to Sir Francis Meynell, which Mr. Morison's own writings have done so much to appraise and to clarify."
