Sylmar, CA: Glenn Bray, 1980. First Trade Edition, one of 1200 total copies. Signed by Szukalski in year of publication on page [9] of Pearls. Oblong quarto bound tete-beche. [176] pp. Illustrations throughout, chiefly black and white. Illustrated wraps. Laid in are a flexi record of Szukalski speaking, an advertisement for a signed Copernicus print, double-sided publisher's advertisement, a "signed copy" card and a bookmark of Protong vocabulary. Also has a name-filled manuscript note titled "Szukalski Book / Give-A-Way" and a typewritten, four-page essay titled "Polacy Czy Katolicy?" or "Poles or Catholics?" laid in. Wraps smudged with mild surface scratching; creased and curled at corners with spine ends lightly worn. Joint to Pearls side almost cracked, but binding overall sound if cocked. Tape residue to recto of Protong cover. Pages curled at corners and prelims to both sides lightly soiled but interior else unmarked; a Very Good copy. Uncommon in retail. Hailed as one of Poland's greatest living artists in the 1930s, and mired in controversy through most of his professional life, much of Szukalski's work was destroyed during the 1939 siege of Warsaw. Troughful of Pearls documents many of these works alongside the artist's commentary. The Protong section dives into Zermatism, Szukalski's grand post-war project a view of world history and culture, claiming that all humanity came from post-deluge Easter Island, shared an ancient mother tongue, and were locked in an eternal struggle with Yetinsyny or "Sons of Yeti." The short typewritten essay laid in mostly berates Poland for bowing to the "influence of Italian agents posing as 'priests'" or the Kremlin. The last paragraph muses "The history of nations is strangely just. Only those nations that deserve freedom are free." Each page includes manuscript notes or corrections, presumably Szukalski's own.
