Inscribed by the author to upper free endpaper: "For Majorie - with gratitude and admiration - Truman." A Fine copy in like dust jacket. Publisher's red cloth with spine and upper board stamped in gilt and silver. Top edge stained back. In the unclipped first issue dust jacket with with "1/66" code on front flap and "Publishers of The American College Dictionary and The Modern Library" on back flap. Back panel of dust jacket a bit rubbed, still an excellent example. At its initial release, In Cold Blood catapulted the already infamous Capote into an even higher authorial stratum, and it earned him praise as the inventor of a new genre: the non-fiction novel. Drawing on over 8,000 pages of notes and interviews, Capote constructed a chilling true-life tale of a quadruple homicide in a small Midwestern town, examining the town members affected by the deaths as well as psychological examinations of the killers themselves. The New York Times immediately praised the book: "a masterpiece.agonizing, terrible, possessed, proof that the times, so surfeited with disasters, are still capable of tragedy." We have been unable to identify the "Marjorie" in the inscription, though the warmth of the inscription indicates that she was a friend of the author. Capote more often signed his first and last name when inscribing copies of In Cold Blood, and seemed to reserve his simple, first-name-only inscriptions for more significant presentations. For example, the copy inscribed by Capote in May 1963 to Kansas Bureau of Investigation Agent Harold Nye, one of the agents who appears In Cold Blood, was signed simply "Truman."
