Original large engraved map (133 x 100 cm) with contemporary hand-colouring, dissected into 32 panels and laid onto linen, folding into original marbled paper chemise and slipcase (25 x 17 cm) with gilt-lettered title label to spine. The map embellished with calligraphic engraved title, compass rose showing Roman coin celebrating the conquering of Jerusalem issued by the Flavians (JVDAEA CAPTA), and four inset diagrams illustrating "The Red Sea from Point Attaka", "The Valley of Jordan opposite Jericho", "The Gulf near Suez" and the "Elevation of the Wilderness of Sinai". The stages of the Israelites exodus from Egypt are also depicted along with an explanatory key. Engraved label of map publisher and cartographer J. Andriveau-Goujon to verso. Some light offsetting, verso a bit toned, generally an excellent copy of this striking, large format map with attractive hand-colouring. A rare map, OCLC finds 4 copies, and just one of this edition published in 1845 (the others being dated 1841 and 1854). This map is particularly focused on highlighting areas relevant to the Old Testament narratives, specifically those related to the Exodus, the journeyings of the Israelites, and their settlement in the Land of Promise. The title cartouche emphasises the dual focus on ancient and modern geographical features, presenting a detailed account of the topographical and physical characteristics of the regions. The map includes detailed depictions of mountains, rivers, and other significant landmarks, accompanied by explanatory notes. Various routes, including the journey of the Israelites and modern travel routes, are meticulously plotted. In addition the map identifies cities and towns mentioned in the Sacred Scripture, ruins of ancient cities, modern towns and villages, monasteries and convents, castles and forts, as well as sites of historical battles. Political divisions prior to the Babylonian captivity and the present names of districts are distinctly shaded. Geological notations are inserted at points of route where travellers made their observations, drawing from the works of Burckhardt, Buckingham, La Borde, Robinson & Smith, and others. Richard Palmer, the compiler of this map, employed the most authentic sources available at the time to create a comprehensive and accurate representation of these historically and religiously significant regions. His work reflects the scholarly endeavours of the period to reconcile geographical knowledge with biblical accounts, contributing to the fields of biblical studies, geography, and cartography.
