First edition, with an original leaf from the Coverdale Bible tipped in as issued, number 145 of 425 copies only. The original leaf (sig. 2i4) has a woodcut initial and prints the end of 2 Samuel and the opening passages of 1 Kings. This publication was prepared for members of the Book Club of California by Lawton and Aldred Kennedy. The Coverdale Bible (1535) was the first complete printed English translation, and the first complete translation into Modern English. It was translated by Myles Coverdale (c.1488-1569), who used William Tyndale's (c.1494-1536) translation of the New Testament (1526) as the basis for his own version. Provenance: Arthur Haddaway (died 1981), with his ownership inscription, a gift to Stephen C. Massey, with Massey's pencilled inscription to that effect below. Laid in is a single-lot catalogue by John Howell Books, of San Francisco, offering a copy of the Coverdale Bible, which Arthur Haddaway bought from Howell (later his sale, Christie's New York, 25 September 1981, lot 171). Folio. Original leaf tipped in between pp. 32-33 as issued. Engraved frontispiece, full page facsimile illustrations in text, folding map. Original black quarter cloth, spine lettered in gilt, red cloth sides, front cover lettered and decorated in black. With dust jacket. Original leaf with a couple of spots. Loosely inserted sales notice for a copy of the Coverdale Bible offered by John Howell in 1973, containing Massey's pencilled notes. Ownership inscription of Grolier Club member, Arthur Haddaway (1901-1981), in blue ink on front free endpaper, "to SCM" pencilled underneath.
