He directed excavations, in the 1960s and 1970s, at the Bronze and Iron Age site of Tell Deir 'Alla, and was later involved in the excavations at the nearby Mamluk site of Tell Abu Sarbut. This volume, dedicated to his memory, is about these two sites in the Jordan Valley, the region to which Franken devoted so much of his time and energy, and about the interaction between the land and its people. As a result of recent comparative and phylogenetic studies, several taxa previously treated as separate families are now included within Tenebrionidae, and alternatively others previously included in Tenebrionidae are now classified in other families. The aim of this work is to synthesize available taxonomic, nomenclatural, and distributional information for all darkling beetles known from North America, a region defined as the continent in the Western Hemisphere consisting of Greenland, Canada, United States of America, Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies. All valid family-group (8 subfamilies, 52 tribes, 14 subtribes), genus-group (349 genera, 86 subgenera), and species-group names (2825 species, 215 subspecies) of darkling beetles recorded from North America and their available synonyms are listed. Data on extant, subfossil and fossil taxa are given. For each name the author, year and page number of the description are provided, with additional information (e.g., type species for genus-group names, author of synonymies for invalid taxa) depending on the taxon rank.Several new nomenclatural acts are included. One new genus is described, new replacement names are proposed and usage of one species-group name is conserved using reversal of precedence. Several new synonyms are proposed for genus- and species-group taxa while some taxa previously thought to be junior synonyms are hereby considered valid. Increasing incidence has pushed malignancy of the upper aerodigestive tract into the first rank of cancer. In some countries it follows bronchial carcinoma in frequency and is more common than gastro-intestinal and gynaecological cancer. This increasing incidence makes it difficult to train enough highly specialised staffwho are also responsible for the care of many other patients, requiring sophisticated microsurgery of the ear and nose. The question of quality is even more difficult. Oncological success in the treat ment of head and neck cancer is bought at the price of crippling of vital functions such as eating, breathing, voice and sight and furthermore of striking aesthetic de formity. Mutilation of this highly functional collection of organs is more keenly felt than that of any other region of the body. It is vital, therefore, that the surgeon keeps up with the recent achievements of functional surgery in order to offer the best ser vice to his patients. Cancer of the larynx is no exception. Despite newer techniques of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, surgery still gives the best oncological results. This requires a wide spectrum of operations varying from minimal ablation to total laryngectomy.
