[artifact, microscope] Gould-type microscope by Cary LONDON signed

We are proud to offer a Gould-type microscope signed by Cary, LONDON in wood box covered in thin red leather. There is wear to the leather overall (including old tape removal marks) and some minor loss. The inside of the box is lined in purple velvet (probably a replacement given the heavy hand gluing ). The instrument appears complete, and although we haven't tested it appears in working order. Three small objectives are present, all with glass, and can be attached either with or without a compound tube, also included. Accessories include a live box and pin and knife for on site dissecting work. There is a group of three slides with space for six specimens each. The velvet lined tray appears to have been glued in place rather than leaving it removable. Turner, an acknowledged expert in the scientific instrument field provides some useful information on Cary, Gould and the confusion between Cary Type and Gould Type instruments. William Cary (1750-1825) was a well known instrument maker who had been apprenticed to Jesse Ramsden (1735-1800). One of Cary's men (Charles Gould) designed a pocket microscope in the 1820s to "satisfy the wave of interest in natural history." After Cary's death the firm continued in his name, managed by his nephews. Turner notes "Thus this type of instrument has become known as 'a Cary-type microscope' although 'Gould-type' would be fairer." So Turner uses Gould-Type instrument which we do as well. Turner further notes that "Since it was convenient to take into the field, it became one of the most popular instruemnts of its time. There are quote considerable numbers still in existence, and these show some variations in size, .different modes of supporting the pillar." We've seen independent bases, some screwing into the lid [as here], and some screwing into one of the side rails of the box. This example is SIGNED which many are not. Turner notes similar forms with different manufacturer names appear to be in the same engravers hand so Cary London may have made examples for other retailers. All in all, a nice example.
