Amsterdam: Cornelis Danckerts, [after 1630]. Quarto (31 ? 20.5 cm). Contemporary card interim wrappers with marbled-paper cover; title page, 25 copper plates and an additional copper plate depicting an epitaph. Binding with traces of use and fraying to spine strip; internally about very good. Rare first architectural publication by the publishing house of Cornelis Dankerts. It features a series of classicist Italian entrance gates, which were adapted to the sober Dutch taste by dispensing with any ornamental and allegorical decorations. The last, non-related copper plate, on the other hand, shows a richly decorated epitaph from around 1700. The engraver and publisher Cornelis Danckerts (1604?1656) established his publishing business in Amsterdam around 1630, which dealt with the production and sale of prints, maps, and illustrated books and was eventually passed on to his son of the same name after his death. An important business area was the production of reproduction copperplate engravings, which made the paintings of Rubens, Rembrandt, Hals etc. known far beyond the borders of the Netherlands and Flanders. One of Danckert's most important pupils was Jacob von Sandrart, who later worked as an engraver on the major work of art theory and art history (?Teutsche Academie?) by his uncle, Joachim von Sandrardt. (Cf. Rudolf Feurer, AKL XXIV, 2000, 77) In the field of architecture, the Danckerts publishing house is regarded as a pioneer of an independent Dutch building technique. Danckerts thus continued a family tradition: Two generations before him, in the middle of the sixteenth century, the progenitor Cornelis Danckertsz (1536?1595) held the office of master mason in the city of Amsterdam. Similarly, its sons worked in Amsterdam as stonemasons, architects and stonecutters. Even though Danckerts turned to printmaking and publishing, he grew up in an environment that lived from and with the construction of neoclassical houses along the new canals, in which architectural challenges and aesthetic developments in Italy and France were thematic. (Cf. Goudeau 2020) "The three successive generations of the Danckerts family as printmakers and book publishers would become responsible for a series of highly influential publications on architecture over the course of the seventeenth century. Their publisher?s list covers both theory and practice, with authors ranging from one of the first Dutch classicist architects, Salomon de Bray, to the Italian architect and theorist Vincenzo Scamozzi, up to the Swedish engineer Pieter Linperch, bridging a period from about 1630 to 17278. With over thirty different titles, many of them issued in successive editions, Danckerts operated in the heartlands of architectural publishing. If any publisher was to have come up with treatises of a technical character, it should have been Danckerts." (ibid.) Jeroen Goudeau.
