The Deadender is a novel by Alex de Schweinitz that leads the reader through fast-paced pages rolling out Eli Cochran’s extraordinary experiences as his life and mind spin out of control. By the time Eli leaves high school he is in the grip of undiagnosed Bi-polar Disorder and well on the way to alcoholism. In a blur of college classes, lost jobs, bar fights, DWIs, violent arrests and stints in psych wards, he somehow hangs onto academic ambitions. And at age 34, a miracle occurs; he stops drinking and gets a second chance at life. What he does with that chance is a story of the undefeatable human spirit.
Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor: Alex de Schweinitz graduated from Lamar University in 1970 with a B.A. in English. However, he pursued graduate work in psychology with the intent of becoming a clinical psychologist. He completed his M.A. in psychology in 1976 from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. While working for a clinic in Southeast Texas he completed court appointed psychometric assessments on troubled adolescents and interviewed school district students exhibiting early signs of emotional disturbance. He also worked for several years as a substance abuse counselor in Northern California. By 1989, his love for writing poetry and the use of language to cultivate critical thinking prompted his move to become a college teacher of remedial English. From 1988 through 2008 his poems have been published by a number of small magazines in Texas, California, and New Mexico. Alex has also designed a creative writing program to offer inmates a tool for addressing their alcohol and other drug addictions. Writing Out Of Trouble, WOOT, has been a resource not only for his own growth and recovery, but he is able to pass this tool on to inmates saddled with addiction. He has been clean and sober himself since 1983. Currently, he finds tremendous satisfaction as a writer who can blend his background in psychology with his love for language. He hopes THE DEADENDER may be inspiring for all those afflicted by troubles of their own, and may give the general reader a way to see such troubled lives with new insight and greater compassion. His latest project is to write a non-fiction journey exploring the thirteen year professional and personal friendship between his father, George W. de Schweinitz, and Denise Levertov.
