Five consecutive issues of the montly Colour Magazine from August 1923 to January 1924 (that for November/December is a double issue comprising Nos 4 & 5), bound together into a single hardcover volume. Each issue is around 36pp, extensively illustrated in colour and black and white, with numerous contemporary advertisements. Blue cloth-covered boards with red and black lettering front and spine. Folio. Cloth is a little tired, rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends, cloth lghtly sunned and dry over spine. Binding is a little fragile in places, with teh front hinge cracked. Front endpapers tanned and rear endpapers a little stained and soiled else internally neat, clean and bright. Colour Magazine, self-billed as 'the most fascinating magazine in the world' - was a montly art and literary publication issued between 1914 and 1932 (with a brief suspension from February 1927 to October 1928). It included short stories, eassys and a few poems but its raison d'etre was the reproduction in colour of the works of contemporary artists, often focussing on artists from the Camden Town Group and the London Group. These issues include a complete serial story - The Treasures of Typhon by Eden Phillpotts - and reproductions of works of art by Alfred Wolmark (painter and decorative artist, pioneer of the new Movement in art), John J Murphy, Jan Juta (the painter and muralist who executed the portrait of D H Lawrence which currently hangs in the Nationasl Portrait Gllery); Betty Fagan; Anna K Zinkeisen; Irish artist W Conor, known for his paintings of Belfast's shipyards; Ambrose McEvoy; the unjustly forgotten Clara Klinghoffer who in her own time became an overnight success with her frist full scale exhibition of sixty works at the Hampstead Gallery at the age of 19; Alfred Munnings and many, many more.
