EXCEPTIONALLY RARE ! . *** **** *** . . A FAVORITE PIN OF THE HONG WEI BING [RED GUARDS] . . . DURING THE WEN HUA DA GEMING [CULTURAL REVOLUTION] . . . WITH THE SAYING ON THE BACK: "MAO ZHU XI WAN SUI" . . . ["LONG LIVE CHAIRMAN MAO"] . . . MANUFACTURED IN SHANGHAI . . . SHOWS CHAIRMAN MAO IN A LEFT PROFILE . . . WITH SUNRAYS BACKGROUND . *** This is one of the favorite pins of the Wen Hua Da Geming [Cultural Revolution 1966-1976], popularly worn by Hong Wei Bing [Chinese Red Guards], while on the march, in mass demonstrations and on the rampage. . *** THE PIN: The front of the pin shows a left profile of Chairman Mao, on a large red "sunray" background. . Made by the SHANG HAI HONG QI HUI ZHANG CHANG [Shanghai Red Flag Badge Factory] . On the verso is Hanzi text of the famous Red Guard slogan: "MAO ZHUXI WAN SUI ["LONG LIVE CHAIRMAN MAO"]. Below that is:"Zhongguo Shanghai." [Shanghai, China]. ." This pin is 4.8 cm. in diameter, with brass pin back. . *** THE SETTING: This pin commemorates the historic and mass rally in Tiananmen square on August 18, 1966, when over one million Red Guards gathered for a personal audience with Chairman Mao. . LIN Biao took center stage, "vociferously denouncing all manner of perceived enemies in Chinese society that were impeding the "progress of the revolution." . At the Red Guard rallies, LIN also called for the destruction of the "Four Olds"; namely, old customs, culture, habits, and ideas. See Wikipedia below. . "Mao personally mingled with Red Guards and threw his weight behind their cause, donning a Red Guard armband himself. Between August and November 1966, eight mass rallies were held in which over 12 million people from all over the country, most of whom were Red Guards, participated. The government bore the expenses of Red Guards travelling around the country exchanging "revolutionary experiences." See Wikipedia below. . ***: IN THE RARE ORIGINAL RED INK-PRINTED PAPER ENVELOPE . This pin is as issued by the factory, with the original red-printed ink on a plain paper envelope. 5 x 7.1 cm. . ON THE FRONT: The front cover of the envelope reads: a. "Xiang Zhang" or "Like a Chapter" [From Mao's Book] . b. Written in LIN Biao's calligraphy & signed slogan in red ink Chinese Hanzi: . " Du Mao zhu xi de shu, Ting Mao zhu xi de hua , Zhao Mao zhu xí de zhi shì ban shi, Zuò Mao zhu xí de hao zhan shì." "Study Chairman Mao's Writings, Follow his teachings, Act according to his instructions." . c. To the left of Lin's slogan, is the name and place of the pin factory. . ON THE BACK: Cautions on the back side state: 1. "Shuo Míng" or ["Instructions'] 2. "Pei dai shi bu yao jing chang mo ca" or "Do not rub . frequently when wearing" 3. "Bu yao chu ji suan jian wu zi" or "Don't touch with . acid-base materials" . *** CONDITION: . BADGE: SUPERB, NEW OLD STOCK, UNUSED, WITH PAPER ENVELOPE IN VERY GOOD PLUS CONDITION: . THE BADGE: The badge is in superb, unused, unblemished condition, a stunningly flawless example. Made of pressed aluminum, beautifully red over printed brilliant plastic. The back side is indented as usual, with Chinese Hanzi text [see above], with brass pin back, typical of badges of this early period. . PAPER ENVELOPE: The envelope has some old wrinkles where the badge outline is evident, with small closed tears on the edges, all in all a rare pair of fine examples. The envelope is seldom if ever found, being promptly discarded after extraction of the pin. . *** DATE OF ISSUE: Though the pins are undated, but issued to celebrate the mass rally held in Tiananmen Square on August 18th, 1966 we believe this pin was issued promptly thereafter, ca.1966 - 1967. .
