Moderate toning, light wear to left edge from disbinding. $750. * The Athenian Mercury was published from March 17, 1690 [i.e. 1691] to June 14, 1697 by bookseller and author John Dunton. Each issue consisted of a series of questions submitted by readers and answers generated by "expert" members of Dunton's Athenian Society; the magazine is considered to have pioneered the advice column format. The questions ranged widely in nature, with readers seeking advice on matters of philosophy, law, natural science, politics and love. The magazine provides interesting insight into various cultural aspects of late Stuart England, such as gender relations and political issues. An interesting feature of this issue is an advertisement for "Mr. Increase Mather's New Discourses Concerning the New-England Witches and Witchcrafts." This was a reprint of Mather's Cases of Conscience, first published in Boston in 1693, with an added narrative of personal observations by Deodat Lawson, "a Person who was upon the place six or seven days, when the suspected witches were first taken into Examination." Dunton published it later in 1693 under the title A Further Account of the Tryals of the New-England Witches. An enthusiastic proprietor of witch trial-related material, he was also the English publisher of Cotton Mather's infamous The Wonders of the Invisible World (1693).
