The book is centered on a translation of the Kitab al-Fawa'id fi usul al-bahr wa'l-qawa'id (Book of Profitable Things Concerning the First Principles and Rules of Navigation), written in 1489 90 by the famous Arab navigator Ahmad ibn Majid. The work is regarded as the primary bridge between the classical Arabic navigational texts and modern Western historiography. It effectively dismantled the earlier European-centric view that Indian Ocean navigation was primitive before 1498, instead demonstrating a "superiority of Arab knowledge" in geography and astronomy.
