In den Warenkorb[Paris?]: Izdanie federatsii Anarkhistov-Kommunistov, 1913. Octavo (18.5 × 12 cm). Original printed staple-stitched wrappers; 8 pp. Unopened and uncut; wrappers detached and lightly chipped at corners. Good. A rare pamphlet on radical socialism written by Petr Kropotkin, a Russian revolutionary, activist, and one of the central philosophers of international anarcho-communism. Born into a noble family, Kropotkin (1842-1921) became involved in Socialist activities in 1872. Following arrest and persecution he was forced to flee Russia in 1876, living in France, where he was arrested for anarchist activity, Switzerland, from which he was expelled for his political writing, and England, where he founded Freedom Press, an anarchist newspaper turned publishing house still in operation today. In 1917 he triumphantly returned to Russia after the February Revolution. Although originally supportive of the October Revolution, Kropotkin came to be disillusioned with Lenin's dictatorial tendencies. This pamphlet, originally written in French and published on the eve of WWI, discusses the tactics and failures of the socialist-democrats in Russia and in Germany in reaching workers in urban areas. The pamphlet was published by the Federation of Anarcho-Communists, a clandestine organization that operated from Paris. Not in the Russian State or National Libraries. …

Octavo (22cm); blue cloth boards, lettered in gilt on spine; [5], 6-259, [2], iv, + [8]pp publisher's ads. Minimal external wear; internally clean and unmarked; a Near Fine copy. "Tom I" all published. First American edition of what Kropotkin's editor Lebedev called "the swan song of the great humanitarian scientist and revolutionist-anarchist, [constituting] as it were, the crowning work and the résumé of all the scientific, philosophical, and sociological views of Peter Alekseyevich Kropotkin" (from Lebedev's foreword, as translated by Louis Friedland for the 1924 English-language edition). That this major work of anarchist philosophy had its first American incarnation in a Russian-language edition testifies to the still-powerful influence of the Russian exile intellectual community in the years immediately following the Revolution. A very nicely preserved copy of a major (and uncommon) Kropotkin work.…
