Paperback. Zustand: Good. Olivia Franklin, a young, beautiful, British pediatric physician, has been told her entire life that she is the mirror image of Princess Diana. In a chance encounter with Lt. Colonel Phillip Churchill at a fundraiser in London, a 30-year-old secret starts to unfold when he begins to realize that this uncanny resemblance is no coincidence. Narrowly escaping an assassination attempt, Olivia is aware that her life is in danger. Daniel Whittemore, fellow doctor, and Olivia's former lover discovers Olivia's true identity. Recognizing the enormity of Olivia's situation Daniel forces Olivia to flee London. Olivia and Daniel grow closer as the world crumbles around them. Pursued throughout Europe by Churchill, a man determined to eliminate her, Olivia finds herself embroiled in an international drama involving Scotland Yard, MI6, CIA, Interpol and Buckingham Palace. Churchill vows to end Olivia's life and wipe away all traces of her existence. The threat she presents to the current line of succession, not to mention the public image of the Crown itself is forcing his hand. The Disappearance of Olivia is a story of such controversy that could potentially change the history of the British Royal Family forever. Where is Olivia.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. An exploration of shamanism and the archetypal symbolism that sits at the foundation of all human life - Not just an academic work. Helps the reader experience the actual mindset of the shaman - Presents a cohesive view of the recurrent patterns of symbolism and visionary experience that underlie all religion The human psyche contains archetypal patterns largely lost to contemporary society but which shamans have employed for over 30,000 years to gain access to the spiritual world. Shamanic symbols both affect and reflect these durative patterns that exist, with uncanny similarity, in civilizations separated by expanses of time and distance. The Strong Eye of Shamanism draws together the many facets of the art of shamanism, presenting a cohesive view of the recurrent patterns of symbolism and visionary experience that underlie its practice. The strong eye of the title refers to the archetypal symbolism that sits at the foundation of all human life--whether in Paleolithic caves or today's temples. The author asserts that society has become separated from the power of those symbols that lead us into deeper understanding of our spirituality. In today's world of splintered psyches, a world in which people are in search of their souls, shamanism survives as an age-old technology of soul recovery, a living Rosetta stone that reminds us of the shared foundation that exists beneath even the most radically different perspectives. Through its study of shamanism, archetypal psychology, and symbolism, The Strong Eye of Shamanism encourages individuals--and society--to look inward and remember that the deepest forms of awareness begin with the knowledge that the answers reside within us.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. New York Times Bestseller "What, What? is a welcome-and joyful-reminder that true wisdom comes from asking the right questions. Should you read this book? Absolutely." -Clayton Christensen, bestselling author of How Will You Measure Your Life? Based on the wildly popular commencement address, the art of asking (and answering) good questions by the Dean of Harvard University's Graduate School of Education. Whether we're in the boardroom or the classroom, we spend far too much time and energy looking for the right answer. But the truth is that questions are just as important as answers, often more so. If you ask the wrong question, for instance, you're guaranteed to get the wrong answer. A good question, on the other hand, inspires a good answer and, in the process, invites deeper understanding and more meaningful connections between people. Asking a good question requires us to move beyond what we think we know about an issue or a person to explore the difficult and the unknown, the awkward, and even the unpleasant. In Wait, What?, Jim Ryan, dean of Harvard University's Graduate School of Education, celebrates the art of asking-and answering-good questions. Five questions in particular: Wait, what?; I wonder.? Couldn't we at least.?; How can I help?; and What truly matters? Using examples from politics, history, popular culture, and social movements, as well as his own personal life, Ryan demonstrates how these essential inquiries generate understanding, spark curiosity, initiate progress, fortify relationships, and draw our attention to the important things in life-from the Supreme Court to Fenway Park. By regularly asking these five essential questions, Ryan promises, we will be better able to answer life's most important question: "And did you get what you wanted out of life, even so?" At once hilarious and illuminating, poignant and surprising, Wait, What? is an inspiring book of wisdom that will forever change the way you think about questions.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. How is it that, half a century after Brown v. Board of Education, educational opportunities remain so unequal for black and white students, not to mention poor and wealthy ones? In his important new book, Five Miles Away, A World Apart, James E. Ryan answers this question by tracing the fortunes of two schools in Richmond, Virginia - one in the city and the other in the suburbs. Ryan shows how court rulings in the 1970s, limiting the scope of desegregation, laid the groundwork for the sharp disparities between urban and suburban public schools that persist to this day. The Supreme Court, in accord with the wishes of the Nixon administration, allowed the suburbs to lock nonresidents out of their school systems. City schools, whose student bodies were becoming increasingly poor and black, simply received more funding, a measure that has proven largely ineffective, while the independence (and superiority) of suburban schools remained sacrosanct. Weaving together court opinions, social science research, and compelling interviews with students, teachers, and principals, Ryan explains why all the major education reforms since the 1970s - including school finance litigation, school choice, and the No Child Left Behind Act - have failed to bridge the gap between urban and suburban schools and have unintentionally entrenched segregation by race and class. As long as that segregation continues, Ryan forcefully argues, so too will educational inequality. Ryan closes by suggesting innovative ways to promote school integration, which would take advantage of unprecedented demographic shifts and an embrace of diversity among young adults. Exhaustively researched and elegantly written by one of the nation's leading education law scholars, Five Miles Away, A World Apart ties together, like no other book, a half-century's worth of education law and politics into a coherent, if disturbing, whole. It will be of interest to anyone who has ever wondered why our schools are so unequal and whether there is anything to be done about it.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Somewhere along the line, you've been taught some version of this: Your quiet time with God is only effective when you have the perfect atmosphere, the proper tools, and the right formula. You must rise before dawn, gather your study Bible, devotional book, concordance, highlighters, colored pencils, and journal and devote thirty minutes of undisturbed silence to communicate with the Lord. If you cannot do this every day without fail, you must not love Jesus. When it comes to your quiet time, it's time to say no to someone else's rules or magic formulas that work perfectly for him or her but only create chaos and guilt in your own life. With the perfect blend of sarcasm and Scripture, Emily Ryan exposes the most common myths about traditional quiet times and gives you the freedom you need to chase after God in your own unique way. The book includes small group discussion questions and an exhaustive list of practical ideas that will help you get to know God rather than get to know how to have the perfect quiet time. …
