Ingénieur des Ponts et Chaussées et économiste, Achille-Nicolas Isnard (1748-1803) est considéré comme l'un des précurseurs de l'économie mathématique. Il est notamment l'auteur d'un traité pionnier en la matière: 'Traité des richesses' (1781), auquel il renvoie à la page 23 de cette brochure. Édition originale rare de cet ouvrage fondateur de l'économie mathématique.« Le traité d'Achille-Nicolas Isnard (1748-1803) est une oeuvre tout à fait remarquable, bien que son noyau théorique s'inscrive dans des arguments par ailleurs assez classiques contre les doctrines physiocratiques. Isnard fut le premier auteur à tenter une définition et une démonstration mathématiques de l'équilibre économique. Son traité est aujourd'hui extrêmement rare. Isnard était tout simplement un brillant pionnier, visionnaire, et comme tant d'autres figures quasi tragiques de l'analyse économique (par exemple, Cournot et Gossen), il n'a reçu la reconnaissance qu'il méritait que bien après sa disparition. Isnard is best known for his important and rare Traité des richesses of 1781, a pioneering work which anticipated many of the ideas of Walras and other economists of the end of the next century. Furthermore, he gave specific form to the general equilibrium concept by constructing a set of simultaneous equations which, in general form and content, anticipated the major elements of the Walrasian system, including the general interdependence of markets and quantities, the technical specifications of the exchange ratios, and the mathematical determination of the numéraire. It remained for Walras to add the engine of utility maximization and to adapt Isnard's model to his own purposes, something which, according to Jaffé, he did with persistence, if not with ease. Isnard's pioneer efforts do not in any way denigrate Walras's monumental achievement, but they do lend force to the conviction that the development of economics was, and remains, a cumulative process. The scope and sweep of his analysis unquestionably entitle Isnard to a position of prominence in the history of economic thought. Yet appropriate recognition took a long time.
