L'auteur impute au 'Contrat social' et à la conception rousseauiste de la loi comme expression de la volonté générale les causes profondes des révolutions qui ont agité la France, Genève et l'Amérique au XVIIIe siècle. Ingénieur des Ponts et Chaussées et économiste, Achille-Nicolas Isnard (1748-1803) est considéré comme l'un des précurseurs de l'économie mathématique. Il est notamment l'auteur d'un traité pionnier en la matière: 'Traité des richesses' (1781), auquel il renvoie à la page 23 de cette brochure. Édition originale rare de cet ouvrage fondateur de l'économie mathématique.« Le traité d'Achille-Nicolas Isnard (1748-1803) est une oeuvre tout à fait remarquable, bien que son noyau théorique s'inscrive dans des arguments par ailleurs assez classiques contre les doctrines physiocratiques. Isnard fut le premier auteur à tenter une définition et une démonstration mathématiques de l'équilibre économique. Son traité est aujourd'hui extrêmement rare. Isnard était tout simplement un brillant pionnier, visionnaire, et comme tant d'autres figures quasi tragiques de l'analyse économique (par exemple, Cournot et Gossen), il n'a reçu la reconnaissance qu'il méritait que bien après sa disparition. Compte tenu de son influence manifeste sur Walras, Théocharis n'a probablement pas exagéré lorsqu'il a qualifié le traité d'Isnard de « l'une des contributions les plus importantes à l'histoire du développement de l'économie mathématique. » (New Palgrave).
