Isnard contre J.-J. Rousseau", 'Humanisme', 2012/3, n°297). (Conlon, 'Ouvrages relatifs à J.-J. Rousseau', n°783. INED, 2321. Martin & Walter, 16965. Sabin, 35261). Très bon exemplaire, très frais, parfaitement conservé.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, "extremely rare" (New Palgrave), of "one of the most important contributions in the history of the development of mathematical economics" (Theocharis, p. 62). "Isnard's Traité is a highly original work, despite the fact that its theoretic core is embedded in otherwise unexceptional arguments against physiocratic doctrines. [Isnard] was the first writer to attempt a mathematical definition and a mathematical proof of an economic equilibrium. The scope and sweep of his analysis unquestionably entitle Isnard to a position of prominence in the history of economic thought. Yet appropriate recognition took a long time. Isnard was simply a brilliant pioneer who wrote ahead of his time, and like so many other semi-tragic heroes of economic analysis (e.g. Cournot and Gossen), he failed to receive his due until long after departing the scene" (New Palgrave). In den WarenkorbFirst edition, proposing to the Estates General "detailed lists of the political and economic reforms Isnard deemed necessary to sweep away many of the privileges and expedients of the Ancien Regime and restore private prosperity, legal clarity and fiscal security to France" (Berg, p. 13). Isnard is best known for his important and rare Traité des richesses of 1781, a pioneering work which anticipated many of the ideas of Walras and other economists of the end of the next century. The optimistic attitude to the Estates General which Isnard here displays soon changed to severe scepticism as the revolution progressed. Kress B.1434; not in Einaudi, Goldsmiths, or INED. Richard Van Den Berg, At the Origins of Mathematical Economics, 2005. Octavo (186 x 119 mm). Nineteenth-century marbled wrappers, marbled edges. Wrappers chipped and split, title toned, lightly foxed, a very good copy.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, "extremely rare" (The New Palgrave), of "one of the most important contributions in the history of the development of mathematical economics" (Theocharis, p. 62), here an extraordinarily fresh copy. "Isnard's Traité is a highly original work, despite the fact that its theoretic core is embedded in otherwise unexceptional arguments against physiocratic doctrines. [Isnard] was the first writer to attempt a mathematical definition and a mathematical proof of an economic equilibrium. Furthermore, he gave specific form to the general equilibrium concept by constructing a set of simultaneous equations which, in general form and content, anticipated the major elements of the Walrasian system, including the general interdependence of markets and quantities, the technical specifications of the exchange ratios, and the mathematical determination of the numéraire. It remained for Walras to add the engine of utility maximization and to adapt Isnard's model to his own purposes, something which, according to Jaffé, he did with persistence, if not with ease. Isnard's pioneer efforts do not in any way denigrate Walras's monumental achievement, but they do lend force to the conviction that the development of economics was, and remains, a cumulative process. Cournot and Gossen), he failed to receive his due until long after departing the scene" (The New Palgrave, II, 1004f). Provenance: half-title in vol. I and initial binder's blank in vol. II with pencilled shelf mark and library stamp of the Fürsten Starhemberg'sche Familien Bibliothek of Schloss Eferding, the Austrian seat of the Starhemberg family for around 450 years; part of the library was sold in 1956 and other portions have since entered the market. The books have long been noted for their exceptional condition. Einaudi 2994; Goldsmiths' 12121; INED 2322; Kress B.374; Mattioli 1692. Reghinos D.
