Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Excellent Condition. Clean cover and int. pages. Good tight binding. Check out photos; ask questions. A courtesan's day in the carefree atmosphere of the famous pleasure quarter the Yoshiwara in Edo (present-day Tokyo) was carefully planned to an hourly schedule. This sequence of twelve and later twenty-four hours proved a convenient device for Japanese print artists and their publishers when devising sets of prints showing favorite beauties of the day engaged in daily activities. This volume presents three prints series on the same theme produced over the course of a century. Besides being an obvious aid to collectors of these sets, it also provides a fascinating insight into the world of the female entertainer in Edo, and later Tokyo. The book opens with Cecilia Seigle's comprehensive introduction to life in this highly structured and tightly controlled pleasure quarter, offering insights into the often hard and occasionally glamorous life of the courtesan in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Edo. The first series treated here, Utamaro's famous 'Twelve Hours in Yoshiwara' (Seirô jûni toki tsuzuki), c. 1794, is shown in all its glory with descriptions by Tim Clark, Keeper of Japanese Antiquities at the British Museum. We then leap forward in time to the Meiji period when the status of women in Japanese society, and particularly those in the Yoshiwara, underwent substantial change. Alfred Marks discusses Yoshitoshi's set 'Twenty-four hours in Shinbashi and Yanagibashi' (Shinryû nijûshi toki), 1880, with translations of the copious textual information on the prints. Amy Newland concludes by examining Toyohara Kunichika's interpretation of the theme of 'twenty-four hours' as represented in his set 'The scenes of the twenty-four hours parodied' (Mitate chûya nijûyoji no uchi), 1890.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text.; Paperback.; 24.5 x 30 cm., 1 kg.; 175 pages with coulur illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The exterior shows edge wear, scuffs and scratches. Interior with minor signs of wear.; Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-92) was one of the most gifted designers of Japanese woodblock prints during the second half of the 19th century. He created over 2,400 woodblock prints and illustrations for more than sixty-five books in a career that spanned some forty years. A star pupil of the prolific and successful Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), Yoshitoshi followed his teacher in the production of strikingly original 'historical' woodblock prints and many such examples are included in this publication. A catalogue of Yoshitoshi's work also demonstrates that he excelled in other genres: his images of strong, beautiful women and of the stars of the Kabuki stage mark a peak in Japanese woodblock print history. Yoshitoshi's artistic legacy has reached into the 21st century, influencing both anime and manga designers. Yoshitoshi: masterpieces from the Ed Freis collection is the first comprehensive publication of Yoshitoshi's oeuvre in almost two decades, and it presents recent advances in scholarship in a re-evaluation of the artist's work. The prints and illustrated books in this volume are drawn from the extensive Ed Freis collection, which houses many of Yoshitoshi's signature compositions and lesser-known images from the artist's early career. Many of the latter are illustrated here for the first time in the West.…

The dust jacket is protected with a clearcover.; The female image is a comprehensive survey of the genre of bijinga ('prints of beautiful woman') produced for the shin hanga ('new print') tradition that evolved in the early 20th century. This bilingual (Japanese/English) publication is lavishly illustrated with works from Japanese, European and American public and private collections. Included are not only prints by major artists such as Ito Shinsui (1898-1972), Hashiguchi Goyo (1880-1921) and Torii Kotondo (1900-76) but also examples from more obscure print designers which have rarely been reproduced. The dust jacket show signs of wear, namely some minor scratches and wear signs. Interior in very good condition. Very good condition overall.; The Japanese woodblock-print designer Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) was active during the second half of the 19th century when Japan experienced immense political, social and cultural changes following the restoration of imperial rule under the Meiji emperor. Many traditional arts were challenged by this new age and the art of the woodblock print (ukiyo-e), unable to continue as it once had, entered into its final period. In the past, scholars and collectors have frequently dismissed ukiyo-e print designers in this area as insignificant, representing the dernise of the ukiyo-e tradition. However, in recent years the prints of a number of these artists have been re- evaluated. Time present and time past: images of a forgotten master, Toyohara Kunichika (1835- 1900) is the first publication in English to treat in detail the life and work of Kunichika, who is considered today one of the last ukiyo-e masters. Kunichika's designs were drawn from established ukiyo-e genres. Ranging from actor prints (yakusha-e), prints of beautiful women (bijinga) to sumo and historical scenes. However, Kunichika was also a man of his time and this is reflected in his use of colour, composition and subjects. In Time present and time past, author Amy Reigle Newland draws on Japanese and Western- language sources to present an overview of Kunichika's life and his prints. She provides a biographical sketch of Kunichika's life, which is followed by sections on the artists prints of beautiful women and actors. In addition the Japanese scholar Shigeru Oikawa presents an essay on Kunichika's fruitful collaboration with the flamboyant painter Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-89). The illustration of over 135 prints by Kunichika, an extensive bibliography, appendices containing carvers seals and Kunichika's representative signature forms make Time present and time past an important contribution to our understanding of this little-known Meiji-period print artist.…

The hardover shows wear (only seem if the dust jacket is removed). Interior with minor signs of wear.; Waves of renewal traces the history of Japanese printmaking following an era of decline beginning in the late nineteenth century. The early twentieth century witnessed the emergence of two principal printmaking movements. The first-shin hanga (new print) -reinvented and revitalised the conventional genres of landscape, beauties and actors. Shin hanga adhered to a traditional production method that was based on the cooperation between artist, block-cutter, printer and publisher. At the same time, it strove to forge a new visual language in both style and technique. The second-sosaku hanga (creative print) - was inspired by the dialogue between Western and Japanese art and aesthetics. In the main, sosaku hanga adherents advocated the participation of the artist in the entire creative process from design to production. Waves of renewal is the most comprehensive publication to date to focus on the holdings of the Nihon no hanga collection in Amsterdam. The 277 prints included showcase the sophistication of shin hanga and the boldness of sosaku hanga. An introductory essay sets the stage, followed by ten shorter essays by noted scholars in the field that centre on aspects integral to our understanding of early to mid-twentieth century Japanese printmaking. Each print is documented and annotated in the extensive catalogue section.…

Good readable/working copy.; The new wave - a term referring to the revival in Japanese woodblock printmaking during the early decades of the twentieth century - presents a comprehensive and authoritative picture of the important, but often neglected shin hanga ('new prints') of the Taisho (1912-1926) and early Showa (1926-1989) periods. The fully-illustrated publication contains three essays: an art historical overview of the developments of shin hanga (Donald Jenkins); a discussion of the pioneering role of the publisher Watanabe Shôzaburô (Henry D. Smith II and Okamoto Hiromi); and an introduction to western artists working in Japan during the formative years of the shin hanga movement (Julia Meech). The largest portion of the publication consists of over 300 annotated entries for each work (Amy Reigle Stephens). The new wave includes all the major figures of the shin hanga movement such as Hashiguchi Goyo, Ito Shinsui, Yamamura Koka and Torii Kotondo as well as over fifty lesser-known artists. In addition, in an attempt to set the stage for the development of the shin hanga movement, the publication also comprises the works by artists of the earlier Meiji period (1868-1912) such as Kobayashi Kiyochika, Kaburagi Kiyokata, Yoshu Chikanobu, Ogata Gekko and others, and by western artists working in Japan. All of the works are drawn from the impressive Robert O. Muller collection, the largest of its kind in the field of shin hanga. …
