The exterior shows edge wear, scuffs and scratches. He created over 2,400 woodblock prints and illustrations for more than sixty-five books in a career that spanned some forty years. A star pupil of the prolific and successful Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), Yoshitoshi followed his teacher in the production of strikingly original 'historical' woodblock prints and many such examples are included in this publication. A catalogue of Yoshitoshi's work also demonstrates that he excelled in other genres: his images of strong, beautiful women and of the stars of the Kabuki stage mark a peak in Japanese woodblock print history. Yoshitoshi's artistic legacy has reached into the 21st century, influencing both anime and manga designers. Yoshitoshi: masterpieces from the Ed Freis collection is the first comprehensive publication of Yoshitoshi's oeuvre in almost two decades, and it presents recent advances in scholarship in a re-evaluation of the artist's work. The prints and illustrated books in this volume are drawn from the extensive Ed Freis collection, which houses many of Yoshitoshi's signature compositions and lesser-known images from the artist's early career. Many of the latter are illustrated here for the first time in the West.
