The exterior shows edge wear, scuffs and scratches. Interior with minor signs of wear.; Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-92) was one of the…most gifted designers of Japanese woodblock prints during the second half of the 19th century. He created over 2,400 woodblock prints and illustrations for more than sixty-five books in a career that spanned some forty years. A star pupil of the prolific and successful Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), Yoshitoshi followed his teacher in the production of strikingly original 'historical' woodblock prints and many such examples are included in this publication. A catalogue of Yoshitoshi's work also demonstrates that he excelled in other genres: his images of strong, beautiful women and of the stars of the Kabuki stage mark a peak in Japanese woodblock print history. Yoshitoshi's artistic legacy has reached into the 21st century, influencing both anime and manga designers. Yoshitoshi: masterpieces from the Ed Freis collection is the first comprehensive publication of Yoshitoshi's oeuvre in almost two decades, and it presents recent advances in scholarship in a re-evaluation of the artist's work. The prints and illustrated books in this volume are drawn from the extensive Ed Freis collection, which houses many of Yoshitoshi's signature compositions and lesser-known images from the artist's early career. Many of the latter are illustrated here for the first time in the West.

Interior with minor signs of wear.; Waves of renewal traces the history of Japanese printmaking following an era of decline beginning in the late nineteenth century. The early twentieth century witnessed the emergence of two principal printmaking movements. The first-shin hanga (new print) -reinvented and revitalised the conventional genres of landscape, beauties and actors. Shin hanga adhered to a traditional production method that was based on the cooperation between artist, block-cutter, printer and publisher. At the same time, it strove to forge a new visual language in both style and technique. The second-sosaku hanga (creative print) - was inspired by the dialogue between Western and Japanese art and aesthetics. In the main, sosaku hanga adherents advocated the participation of the artist in the entire creative process from design to production. Waves of renewal is the most comprehensive publication to date to focus on the holdings of the Nihon no hanga collection in Amsterdam. The 277 prints included showcase the sophistication of shin hanga and the boldness of sosaku hanga. An introductory essay sets the stage, followed by ten shorter essays by noted scholars in the field that centre on aspects integral to our understanding of early to mid-twentieth century Japanese printmaking. Each print is documented and annotated in the extensive catalogue section.
