Notre Dame, Ind: University of Notre Dame Press, 2007, x, 315pp., . This volume draws on the thought of leading international scholars and explores how the Christian tradition can help us understand the theological foundations for the option for the poor. The central focus of the book revolves around the question, How can one live a Christian life in a world of destitution? The contributors are concerned not only with a social, economic, or political understanding of poverty but above all with the option for the poor as a theological concept. - CONTENTS: The multidimensional reality of poverty -- Poverty, poetry, and scripture -- Poverty, patristics, and martyrdom -- Poverty, politics, and apocalyptic mysticism -- Poverty, culture, and community -- Poverty, race, and gender -- Poverty, liturgy, and popular religiosity -- Poverty, religions, and identity. In den WarenkorbMcLane, Paul E. Spenser's Shepheardes calender; a study in Elizabethan allegory. Notre Dame, Ind.: University of Notre Dame Press, 1968, second printing, 370pp., good price-clipped dust-jacket, worn around edges, lightly scuffed and rubbed, very good hardcover. CONTENTS: Political allegory -- Religious allegory -- Personal allegory, poets and scholars -- Problems relating to the allegory. - Vast categories of fascinating past events receive scant attention from historians on the grounds that they represent things that could have happened but didn't. Dr. McLane's subject matter falls within this scope, but,its value for English and history scholars is not thereby diminished. Elizabethan England as described by Edmund Spenser in Shepheardes Calender constitutes just such a situation. In the face of bitter disapproval, Queen Elizabeth, in 1579, was considering marrying a French Catholic prince, but the negotiations fell through, and the projected union of Protestant and Catholic royalty was never consummated. Yet at the time danger of such a union was clear to loyal Protestant Englishmen, who feared Catholicism only a little less than they feared the French. In his Calender Spenser employed the literary conventions of pastoral tradition to honor his friends and to satirize contemporary persons and events about which it might be perilous to speak too openly. Probing into the characters of the principal actors in the drama and identifying with certainty many of them, Dr. McLane has shed new light on the explosive political and religious situation that prevailed in the England of 1579. Since England successfully weathered this political-religious crisis, the historical import of events that could have happened, but didn't, has been drastically lessened. Dr. McLane reveals that Edmund Spenser, magnificent poet though he was, was no ivory-tower dweller: he was a man of his times, and his courage and depth of conviction are clearly revealed in Dr. McLane's study. - Drawings by Rainey Bennett.

Summary: Mi Fu, one of the most celebrated figures in the history of Chinese art, was a prominent calligrapher in eleventh-century China. A member of the educated elite, or literati, he also contributed a great deal to discussions of theoretical issues of function and style in calligraphy, the primary means of graphic expression for the literati. In this book Peter Sturman examines Mi Fu's calligraphy within the framework of the artist's fascinating life, the Northern Song culture in which he lived, and the literati theory of art he helped to formulate. The book is both chronological and topical, following Mi Fu's efforts to develop styles of calligraphy that would communicate his social and personal ideals as they changed according to his place in Song society: as connoisseur of the arts, responsible official, man among mountains and streams, and Daoist talent in the service of the emperor. Sturman's detailed analyses, which consider the content as well as the style of the writing, firmly set Mi Fu's calligraphy in the fabric of Northern Song history. At the same time, Sturman shows how Mi Fu's relationship with the history of calligraphy both before and after him illuminates this most Chinese of arts. 1 Kg.

In den WarenkorbPAPERBACK, attractive copy, onliy slightest wear to corners, very good. SIGNED simply on title page: Luke Wright. WRIGHT, LUKE SAVIN HERRICK. Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the Anglican Church. Notre Dame, Ind: University of Notre Dame Press, 2010, viii, 295pp., . This book is the first systematic historical examination of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's prose religious works. Coleridge (1772-1834) was a prolific writer on the subject of the relationship between church and state. His major contribution to Anglican religious discourse was the revival of the Tory position that the two were an organic Unity, rather than separate entities forming an alliance. His writings were vigorously opposed to the Court Whig theory of church and state. After Coleridge's death in 1834, his arguments were taken up by William Gladstone and carried forward. Wrighes careful, reconstruction of Coleridge's dedication, to church-state issues provides a new perspective ore the writer himself and on the intellectual history of early-nineteenth-century England. - CONTENTS: Coleridge's political milieu -- Coleridge's religious milieu -- A theology of pantisocracy -- Warburton's and Coleridge's readings of Hooker in Counterpoint -- The friend : the project outlined -- The lay sermons : the Christian's actions in society -- Aids to reflection : dissecting the changeling -- On the divine ideas : Coleridge's systematic theology -- On the constitution of the church and state : the Christian nature of society -- Confessions of an inquiring spirit : interpretation of the Scriptures -- Coleridge in a Tory historical context. Soloviev (1853-1900), moral philosopher, social and literary critic, theologian, and poet, is considered one of Russia's greatest philosophers. But Soloviev is relatively unknown in the West, despite his close association with Fyodor Dostoevsky, who modeled one of his most famous literary characters, Alyosha Karamazov, on Soloviev. In The Heart of Reality, Vladimir Wozniuk offers a lucid translation, careful annotations, and a substantive introduction that make many of Soloviev's writings accessible for the first time to an English-speaking audience."
