McLane, Paul E. Spenser's Shepheardes calender; a study in Elizabethan allegory. Notre Dame, Ind.: University of Notre Dame Press, 1968, second printing, 370pp., good price-clipped dust-jacket, worn around edges, lightly scuffed and rubbed, very good hardcover. CONTENTS: Political allegory -- Religious allegory -- Personal allegory, poets and scholars -- Problems relating to the allegory. - Vast categories of fascinating past events receive scant attention from historians on the grounds that they represent things that could have happened but didn't. Dr. McLane's subject matter falls within this scope, but,its value for English and history scholars is not thereby diminished. Elizabethan England as described by Edmund Spenser in Shepheardes Calender constitutes just such a situation. In the face of bitter disapproval, Queen Elizabeth, in 1579, was considering marrying a French Catholic prince, but the negotiations fell through, and the projected union of Protestant and Catholic royalty was never consummated. Yet at the time danger of such a union was clear to loyal Protestant Englishmen, who feared Catholicism only a little less than they feared the French. In his Calender Spenser employed the literary conventions of pastoral tradition to honor his friends and to satirize contemporary persons and events about which it might be perilous to speak too openly. Probing into the characters of the principal actors in the drama and identifying with certainty many of them, Dr. McLane has shed new light on the explosive political and religious situation that prevailed in the England of 1579. Since England successfully weathered this political-religious crisis, the historical import of events that could have happened, but didn't, has been drastically lessened. Dr. McLane reveals that Edmund Spenser, magnificent poet though he was, was no ivory-tower dweller: he was a man of his times, and his courage and depth of conviction are clearly revealed in Dr. McLane's study. - Drawings by Rainey Bennett.
