Oval engraving, 395 x 270mm (plate size), 538 x 374mm (sheet size), 10mm closed tear repaired to upper margin, otherwise particularly fine. Rare oval variant of the well-known Bartolozzi engraving of Cook's death. Webber completed his oil painting of the scene soon after returning to London in 1780, and the print was first issued some four years later, with Bartolozzi taking responsibility for the figures, and Byrne the landscape. Joppien and Smith argue that in the original image Cook is shown as 'an innocent victim, killed in the act of pleading for peace'. This oval version of the scene focuses the attention entirely on Cook as he is surrounded by hostile Hawai'ians. Nothing can be seen of the British marines to whom Cook stretches out his arm - he stands alone, soon to fall at the hands of the angry warriors. Not in Beddie; cf. Joppien & Smith, 3.305A. …

Oval engraving, 350 x 265 mm. (image size); mounted. Rare variant of the famous engraving of Cook's death showing, as the caption notes, "Part of the Original Plate after Webber" and presumably quite literally printed from an oval cut from the fuller engraved copper. This is only very rarely seen: the single example noted by Joppien and Smith was in the British Museum. The full-size engraving was first issued early in 1784. Based on the oil painting executed by Webber soon after he returned to London in 1780, the figures were engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi and the landscape by William Byrne. Quickly becoming the most famous of all eighteenth-century depictions of the massacre, the view appeared at about the same time as the official third voyage account was published. This was no coincidence: although lavishly illustrated by Webber, the official account did not include any depiction of the most famous scene of the entire voyage, the death of Captain Cook. As a result, the iconic engraving is often seen bound into extra-illustrated editions of the third voyage account. Reflecting the general opinion prevailing in published accounts of the voyage, the original image, as Joppien and Smith argue, appeared to show Cook as 'an innocent victim, killed in the act of pleading for peace'. This is here heightened by the changed composition, as the oval shape dictates a radically different impact to that of the original engraving, omitting the dramatic conflict between the British sailors and the Hawaiians and thus implying a scene in which Cook, his arm raised in supplication to his men offstage, stands alone and is overwhelmed by a seething crowd. The only copy noted among Australian holdings appears to be the heavily clipped copy in the National Library of Australia, part of the Nan Kivell collection. . A fine copy of this celebrated engraving. Here with good margins, measuring 480 by 610mm. London, 1. Jany., Along with Oregon's admission to the Union in 1859 and Alexander Graham Bell's application for a patent for the telephone in 1876, Valentine's Day occasionally coincided with major historical events. None more so in the eighteenth century than the death of Captain James Cook on the beach at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii in 1779.    The pre-eminent explorer of his age, Cook's legacy has suffered for being the figurehead of colonisation and the complications which ensued for New World nations and their indigenous populations. Indeed, the circumstances of his death involved Cook trying to facilitate the return of a stolen cutter by taking the Hawaiian King, Terreeoboo or Kalani'opu'u, on board HMS Resolution and holding him there until the boat was returned. Local Hawaiians got word of this and quickly assembled on the beach before the King went onboard. In the ensuing struggle between them and the British sailors, Cook was killed.   As such, one of the many subversive twists on the popular Valentine's Day song goes: Roses are red violets are blue. Hawaiians killed Cook because he tried to kidnap Kalani'opu'u.   This is particularly fine copy of Webber's depiction of the event, which is his most ambitious effort at history painting. Although crammed with figures, the eye is drawn directly to Cook, who is symbolically dressed in white, and in contrast to the greater part of the image, which is dark and indistinct, the warriors and seamen around him are highlighted in his reflected light.   This issue has the full caption with the Webber's dedication to the " Lord Commissioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral."   Joppien & Smith III, 3.305A.…
