This charming print, in a period oak bevelled frame, is a stipple engraving and etching made by Francesco Bartolozzi after the painter John Howes. It was published by John Matth…ews in 1791. The print is a colour print. The technique used for this type of printing involved inking the copper plate in different colours. It was a laborious process and such colour prints are much rarer, and more subtle in their tone, than monochrome prints with later hand colour. Francesco Bartolozzi came to England from Italy and established himself as the pre-eminent engraver of the late 18th century, becoming the first member of the Royal Academy who was not a painter. The speciality he is most associated with is stipple engraving, which uses dots rather than lines and is particularly good for depicting flesh tones. Bartolozzi after the drawing by Biagio Rebecca (ca 1735-1808) of Louis François Roubiliac's (1702-1762) statue of Handel which was then in Vauxhall Gardens. Handel's statue by Roubiliac, commissioned by Jonathan Tyers for Vauxhall Gardens,… is depicted with Handel full-length, seated, facing forwards with legs partly crossed, wearing headwear, long coat and breeches, and playing a lyre with sun motto at top of the instrument, with a cherub writing in a music book resting on a lute at the composer's feet, all surrounded by trees in the distance. This image was used as a frontispiece in Samuel Arnold's collected edition of Handel's works.

Arne is depicted three-quarter-length, standing in profile to the right at a harpsichord, wearing bag-wig and sword, in court dress; "the exaggeration of his elongated melancholy face and the position of the hands give t…he character of a caricature" (M. Dorothy George). The original drawing, attributed to Bartolozzi, evidently a sketch from life, is in the Royal Collection at Windsor.

A copy of the engraved portrait to which these two items refer, titled 'Louis Joseph de Bourbon, prince de Condé, prince du sang', is BM P&D 1850,0211.17, and carries the information "M.de de Tott pinx.", "F. Bartolozzi RA sculp.", and her details, as publisher: "L…ondon Publish'd by M.de de Tott Octo. 1 1802". De Tott's original painting is in the Musée Condé in Paris. See Bartolozzi's entry in the Oxford DNB and the second (1885) edition of Tuer's monograph on him. The two items are attached with a wafer at top inner corner. ONE (signed order by de Tott): On one side of 16.5 x 10.5 slip of laid paper. On reverse, in her hand: 'le Monsieur David Morier / No. 10. Tokenhouse yard / Lothbury -'. In good condition, lightly aged, apart from a clean closed tear made by scissors on opening the wafer, unobtrusively cutting between the 'de' and 'Tott' of her signature. Reads: 'Je prie Monsieur David Morier de vouloir bien remêttre Cent Livres Sterling pour mon Compte, a Mr. G. F. de Queiros, [sic] Eleve de Mr. F. Bartolozzi, qui doit les recevoir au nom de Mr. F. Bartolozzi. pour La moitié du payement de La Gravure qu'il fait, pour moi, du portrait de Mr. Le Pce. de Condé. / Sophie Ernestine Ctesse de Tott'. Death of Captain Cook in February 1779, by the murdering Dagger of a Barbarian at Carakakooa, in one of the Sandwich Isles. He having there become a Victim to his own Humanity. The Distressing Scene is Part of the original Plate after Webber by Messrs Bartolozzi & Byrne.

Rare oval variant of the well-known Bartolozzi engraving of Cook's death. Webber completed his oil painting of the scene soon after returning to London in 1780, and the print was first issue…d some four years later, with Bartolozzi taking responsibility for the figures, and Byrne the landscape. Joppien and Smith argue that in the original image Cook is shown as 'an innocent victim, killed in the act of pleading for peace'. This oval version of the scene focuses the attention entirely on Cook as he is surrounded by hostile Hawai'ians. Nothing can be seen of the British marines to whom Cook stretches out his arm - he stands alone, soon to fall at the hands of the angry warriors. Not in Beddie; cf. Joppien & Smith, 3.305A.
