This editi…on is illustrated F. Bartolozzi and P. W. Tomkins, after W. Hamilton.Half-title is present.List of subscribers to the front.Collated, complete.'The Seasons' is a long blank verse poem, and reflects on the landscape of the countryside, a series of four poems, each focussing on one season of the year. M. W. Turner. The work wasn't just influential in the literary world, but also in the legal world; there were disputes over the publishing rights for the poem, and it led to two important legal decisions, Millar v. Taylor and Donaldson v. Beckett, both landmarks in the history of copywritings. In a modern quarter morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, fine. In den WarenkorbOriginal copper engraving (44 x 60 cm, overall sheet 55 x 68 cm). Tissue guard to verso. Very light foxing to outer margins, not affecting plate. From "A Collection of Prints. Illustrating the Dramatic Works of Shakespeare." published by Boydell, London, 1803. In 1789, the publisher John Boydell opened the Shakespeare Gallery, a…n exhibition space in London's Pall Mall showcasing paintings that exclusively represented scenes from Shakespeare's plays. The Gallery was a bid to revive 'history painting' (the practice of depicting scenes from the Bible, mythology or the classics) in contemporary British art, a genre thought to be of great public benefit because of its morally instructive messages. What better unifying theme for such a project than the works of Shakespeare, which had become so popular and so integral to British identity by the mid-18th century? The Gallery opened in May 1789 with 34 canvases by 18 British artists. By the next year there were 55 paintings and in 1796 the total was 84, along with dozens of 'Small Pictures'. Once the exhibition was mounted, reproductive engravings of the paintings produced by an in-house team of 46 printmakers were available to purchase, either as a large portfolio of 90 prints or as a luxurious illustrated edition of the plays. In den WarenkorbPrint. Zustand: A nice contemporary copy. Separately issued stipple engraved portrait of Cook from a painting by John Webber. The painting was done in Capetown, South Africa in October-November 1776, on Cook's third and final voyage. Cook looks intently towards the artist Webber. His hair is dark; in other portraits, he wears a…white wig. The effect of the small central oval portrait on folio paper emphasizes Cook's intent gaze and his mastery as a captain. How he mis-stepped in Hawaii, where he was eventually murdered, has puzzled many, some suggesting illness overcoming his skill, level headedness & experience. 'Painted at the Cape of Good Hope by J. Webber" beneath left side of the image, and "F. Bartolozzi R.A. sculp" beneath the right edge. "Published as the Act directs, June 4th, 1784, by J. Webber, No. 312, Oxford Street." In den WarenkorbPrint. Zustand: Very good condition. First printing. The separately published image by Webber of one of the iconic images of the 18th century. Cook, already a successful navigator, was immortalized after his death at the hands of Hawaiian natives at Karakakoa Bay. Cook had spent two months on the Big Island in 1779 and was well…received, the natives believing he was a god. When he was forced to return due to a damaged mast, he was viewed as a mortal who had already sorely stretched the supplies of the Hawaiians. It is also thought that his handling of the natives was uncharacteristically brusque, leading to conjecture that this consummate traveler's judgment was somehow impaired. The extended title- "To the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral of Great Britain & c. This Plate representing The Death of Captain Cook is humbly inscribed. By their Lordship's most obedient and devoted Servant, John Webber". Copper engraving, published as the Act Directs 1st Jan. 1784, by J. Webber, No. 312, Oxford Street, and W. Byrne, No. 19, Titchfield Street, London. 22 3/4 x 18 1/4" image size. A very crisp impression on laid, watermarked paper. With the impression mark. A very nice bright clean copy of an important separately published engraving. Some cracking of edges outside the impression mark restored and the print is laid on archival paper. Signed.

In den WarenkorbA fine copy of this celebrated engraving. Here with good margins, measuring 480 by 610mm. London, 1. Jany., Along with Oregon's admission to the Union in 1859 and Alexander Graham Bell's application for a patent for the telephone in 1876, Valentine's Day occasionally coincided with major historical events. None more so in the ei…ghteenth century than the death of Captain James Cook on the beach at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii in 1779. The pre-eminent explorer of his age, Cook's legacy has suffered for being the figurehead of colonisation and the complications which ensued for New World nations and their indigenous populations. Indeed, the circumstances of his death involved Cook trying to facilitate the return of a stolen cutter by taking the Hawaiian King, Terreeoboo or Kalani'opu'u, on board HMS Resolution and holding him there until the boat was returned. Local Hawaiians got word of this and quickly assembled on the beach before the King went onboard. In the ensuing struggle between them and the British sailors, Cook was killed. As such, one of the many subversive twists on the popular Valentine's Day song goes: Roses are red violets are blue. Hawaiians killed Cook because he tried to kidnap Kalani'opu'u. This is particularly fine copy of Webber's depiction of the event, which is his most ambitious effort at history painting. Although crammed with figures, the eye is drawn directly to Cook, who is symbolically dressed in white, and in contrast to the greater part of the image, which is dark and indistinct, the warriors and seamen around him are highlighted in his reflected light. This issue has the full caption with the Webber's dedication to the " Lord Commissioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral." Joppien & Smith III, 3.305A.
