Three vintage photographs of director Orson Welles from the 1947 film. Photographer's stamp on the versos, and two with mimeo snipes on the versos. Welles promised to write, produce, and direct a film for Columbia Pictures president Harry Cohn in exchange for an emergency $55,000 to help finance costuming for his 1946 Broadway m…usical "Around the World." The resultant film, based on Raymond Sherwood King's 1938 novel "If I Die Before I Wake," courted controversy, not least due to Welles' decision to have Hayes cut and bleach her iconic red hair for her performance. Although the film was a commercial failure in the US upon release, it is now considered a touchstone of the noir genre. Shot on location in Mexico. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine. National Film Registry. Two vintage borderless glossy black-and-white studio still photographs from the 1965 film, one with provenance stamp of film historian "Maurice Bessy" and layout annotations in manuscript pencil on the verso. Chimes at Midnight," Welles' third of three legendary Shakespearean adaptations and last masterpiece, is based on his ear…ly play "Five Kings," which condensed Shakespeare's War of the Roses cycle into one story. Welles produced the play in New York in 1939 but the opening night, during which Part 1 was performed, was a disaster, and Part 2 was never staged. He revamped the show and revisited it in 1960, again without success. The later production became the basis for this film, in which Welles plays Falstaff. "Chimes at Midnight," as with nearly all of Welles' efforts as a director, was plagued by financial and logistical problems, shot with nearly no budget, and received no promotion and a very limited release. Nominated for the Palme d'Or, and winner of two other awards at Cannes in 1966. 1) 10 x 8 inches, 1) 9.5 x 7 inches. Near Fine, light edgewear.

Two vintage borderless oversize reference photographs from the 1948 film, both showing director and actor Orson Welles. One with the stamp of photographer Allan Grant on the verso, along with a number stamp and annotations in manuscript ink. Shot on a modest budget, with a very tight production schedule, Welles' "Macbeth" was la…rgely overshadowed by Laurence Olivier's much lauded "Hamlet," released the same year. After the film tested unfavorably in a few cities, Republic Pictures had Welles remove two reels and re-record the film, replacing the cast's Scottish burrs with the actors' natural voices. The original uncut version was restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive and the Folger Shakespeare Library in 1980, and has since been reconsidered as one of Welles' most significant films. Set in 11th century Scotland. One 14 x 11 inches, the other 13.25 x 10.25 inches. Near Fine, lightly worn at the corners.

Archive of seven vintage single and double weight publicity photographs from the 1947 film. Mimeograph snipe on the verso of a few photos notes the Jean Louis clothing designs for the film. Photographers' rubber stamp also to the versos. Based on the 1938 novel "If I Die Before I Wake" by Sherwood King. Surreal and visually stun…ning, The Lady from Shanghai tells a quintessential film noir tale of moral chaos, reaching its climax with a shootout in an abandoned hall of mirrors. The collection features photographs of leading lady Rita Hayworth in various stylish outfits, and sporting the controversial short blonde hairstyle that soon-to-be ex-husband Orson Welles forced her to accept for the role. Robert Coburn, who photographed all but one of the images in this collection, was one of the most influential portrait photographers employed by movie studios from the 1930s to 1960s, with his most famous portraits immortalizing Hollywood's greatest icons and helping to define the era as the Golden Age of Cinema. In 1940, Coburn began a twenty-year career with Columbia Pictures as the head of the still production department and the studio's chief portrait photographer for many landmark films including "Picnic", "Gilda", and "The Big Heat." Set in California, New York, and Mexico, and shot there on location. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine to Fine condition. Grant US Classic Noir. Selby US Masterwork. Spicer US. Silver & Ward Classic Noir.
