Der Schriftsteller, Publizist, Satiriker und Kulturkritiker mit deutschen Wurzeln H.L. Mencken (1880-1956) war Herausgeber des Magazins "The American Mercury" und zählte in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts zu den bedeutendsten Journalisten der USA und war einer der meistgelesenen Autoren. Stolz auf seine deutsche Herkunft, äußerte während beider Weltkriege seine Sympathien für Deutschland. Er war zwar selbst kein Nazi, spielte aber deren Untaten herunter und löste damit heftige Angriffe auf seine Person aus. Viele seiner amerikanischen Leser mochten zwar nicht was er schrieb, bewunderten aber wie er schrieb und sein Werk war in Amerika von großem Einfluß. Als letzte posthume Veröffentlichung erschien nach dem Krieg sein Tagebuch, bei dem er verfügt hatte, daß es erst 25 Jahre nach seinem Tod veröffentlicht werden dürfte, um von den dort erwähnten, noch lebenden Freunden und Feinden niemand durch seine teils schockierenden Tiraden zu verletzen. Da aber einige der Personen doch noch lebten, wurde es dann erst 1989 veröffentlicht. Es enthält auch antisemitische und rassistische Passagen und erregte großes Aufsehen. Sprache: de.
