Hardcover. Zustand: Very good+. First edition. Small quarto. [2], 25, [1] pp. Collation: A-C4, D2 (= 14 leaves). Woodcut printer's device at title page. Printed marginalia. Quarter crimson morocco over linen covered boards. Spine lettered in gilt (loss to spine tail, upper joint worn). Title page dusty and lightly stained at lower margin, else text clean and crisp throughout. First edition of this document of a conflict between Walter Travers (1547 or 1548-1635) and Richard Hooker (1553 or 1554-1600) which dated back to 1586. "This is an appeal made by Travers, who was afternoon preacher at the Temple in London when Hooker was Master (about 1585-91), against the inhibition from preaching issued against him by the Privy Council. Travers was ordained at Antwerp, and had imbibed Genevan doctrine with which he opposed Hooker. Both [the present supplication and Hooker's Answer] have been frequently reprinted, in Hooker's Works, etc." (Madan). Walter Travers (1547 or 1548-1635) matriculated as a member of Christ's College at Cambridge in 1560, "but transfered to Trinity where he was chosen, along with Thomas Cartwright, who was a fellow, to present a formal address to Queen Elizabeth on her famous visit to the university in 1564. Travers seemed set for further academic honours, ordination, and a clerical career. But in 1570 he gave up his fellowship and left England for Geneva, driven out because of his puritan views. John Whitgift, appointed master of Trinity in 1567. commented that he had forced Travers to leave Cambridge by repeated disciplinary procedures. The appointment of Whitgift as archbishop of Canterbury in 1583 marked a decisive turning point for English puritans in general and Travers in particular. Determined to weed out nonconformists, Whitgift promulgated a set of fifteen articles with which he confronted the godly, offering them an impossible choice between subscription and suspension. The puritans used their influence at court to secure a two-day debate with Whitgift on the issue in December 1584, and Travers was selected as one of their two spokesmen. Unsurprisingly it achieved nothing. The choice of Richard Hooker as master of the Temple in 1585 paved the way for a set-piece confrontation between the two wings of the English Reformation. In Fuller's much quoted words, 'the pulpit spake pure Canterbury in the morning and Geneva in the afternoon' (Fuller, Worthies, 1.264). Finally in March 1586 Whitgift intervened, banning Travers from preaching. Whitgift reiterated his complaint that Travers's lack of episcopal ordination [while in Antwerp] made him unfit for preferment in the Church of England. Travers, for his part, determinedly fought to regain his right to preach, continuing to live in the Temple until late 1586, and publishing in that year a self-justifying account of his dispute with Hooker, A Supplication Made to the Council" (ODNB). A scarce work, OCLC locates only a handful of copies outside the UK, including seven in North America. "This issue does not seem to have been published by Travers himself, but only in order to accompany Hooker's posthmously printed Answer" (Madan). References: A. First Edition in English. 194 x 151 mm. (6 5/8 x 6"). 6 p.l. (last blank), 193 pp., [2] leaves (final blank). Very nice late 19th century dark maroon morocco by Lloyd of London (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers framed by gilt and blind rules, blind ruling at corners, raised bands, spine panels with blind-stamped quatrefoil, gilt lettering, gilt-ruled turn-ins, quatrefoil cornerpieces, all edges gilt. Lacking the folding "Table of Discipline" called for in ESTC. Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Albert Ehrman; rear pastedown with Ehrman's faded ink stamp, bookplate of "Bibliotheca Broxbourniana / J. P. W. E. / 17 March 1949 / ex dono A. & R. E." STC 24184; ESTC S118505; USTC 507892. Text washed and pressed (but, except for the first and last few leaves, without the typical resultant darkening and fading), otherwise an extremely attractive copy still fresh, the margins especially wide, and the binding lustrous and scarcely worn. First issued in Latin in the same year as our edition, this is the major work of English puritan Walter Travers (1548? - 1625), applying the Calvinist presbyterian system of ecclesiastical government to the episcopal Church of England. According to DNB, for Calvin and Travers alike, "the duty of the theologian was merely to identify [the church's] structure and apply it to contemporary circumstances. It was in this last respect that Travers's originality lay, for he subtly adapted Calvin's biblical model to an English context. In order to undermine the diocesan episcopate of the English church, Travers started off with an examination of the role of bishops in the New Testament, showing that they were not part of a separate hierarchy with authority over other clergy, but merely ministers of local congregations. He also differed from Calvin in identifying elders as a type of deacon, rather than a separate kind of minister." Our book was written during Travers' 1570-76 sojourn in Geneva, where he became a friend of Calvin's successor, Theodore Beza. Afterwards, he ministered to English merchant marines in Antwerp, where he refused to use the Book of Common Prayer for worship. Despite this, when Travers returned to England, he became chaplain to Elizabeth's chief minister, William Cecil, and tutor to his son. As DNB notes, "his close ties to influential courtiers of a Calvinist inclination" would be key to Travers' career, keeping him out of serious trouble despite his strongly presbyterian views. Our volume has a distinguished provenance, coming from the celebrated Broxbourne library of Albert Ehrman (1890-1969), a diamond merchant who gathered a fine collection of books at his home at Broxbourne in Hertfordshire. He spent half a century collecting books, specializing in incunabula and early bindings (as well as early type specimens and bibliographies). Feather says that "his collecting was intelligent and scholarly, for he sought to illustrate the history of printing and the book trade, and the early development of trade binding." Ehrman also authored learned articles on fine bindings and the history of printing. The present work is uncommon: we could trace just five copies at auction since 1979; only the 1979 copy contained the folding "Table," and that one was noted as "slightly defective and mounted on linen.".
