The author was a Londoner and keen naturalist and student of bird life who moved to Wales in order to study its birds more closely. In this book he recounts his observations. A table at the rear gives a dated check list of all the bird species observed by the author between March and the end of June 1902. The book contains many good photographs, chiefly of birds' nests and eggs, by Oliver G. Pike. In contrast to the edition of the previous year, this smaller-format edition of 1904 appeared in plain green cloth and lacked the sheet of tissue between frontispiece and title-page. It was, however, issued with an extremely pretty dust-wrapper showing a colour painting, by Ernest Aris, of a duck alighting on a woodland pond. This copy is, unfortunately, lacking the dust-wrapper. .

Bookplate belonging to Eric Hosking on the front pastedown. [Eric Hosking OBE, Hon FRPS, FBIPP (1909-1991) was widely acknowledged as one of the world's most eminent natural history photographers, "Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived" (Gemma Padley). He was pioneering and developed new techniques, especially the use of flash photography and automatic shutter release technology, which enabled him to photograph birds at night and freeze birds in flight for the first time. Famously, when just 28 he lost an eye to a tawny owl while climbing up to a hide in rural Wales, the event which inspired the ingeneous title of his autobiography "An Eye for a Bird", 1970. Over his exceptionally long career he photographed over 1,800 species, and his pictures have appeared in some 1,000 books, including the popular New Naturalist series, of which he was photographic editor. Hosking was not only a photographer of birds but also a highly knowledgeable ornithologist. Size: 8vo. Book.

Brown buckram with dust wrappers, top edge gilt. Some light fading to the top of the spines of two volumes where they have been exposed due to corresponding loss to the spines of the wrappers. Some neat repairs to the spines of the dust wrappers which are now protected. Overall a very good set indeed of this impressive work. A book that has far greater interest than local coverage written by a outstanding field ornithologist and oologist. 19 pages alone are devoted to the peregrine falcon largely based on the author's observations in Sussex.
