paperback. Zustand: Good. Publication: London, Whitbread & Co. Ltd., 1959 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 54, illustrated. Condition Report: Good. The staple-bound softcover wraps remain structurally sound, though they exhibit moderate signs of handling and shelf-wear consistent with their age and format. The most notable flaw is a prominent surface tear to the upper right corner of the front wrap, resulting in the loss of the purple ink and exposing the underlying paper, likely from the removal of a previous label. The spine edge shows moderate creasing, rubbing, and minor colour loss along the fold, with some slight softening to the corners. Despite these external imperfections, the binding remains secure, and the internal pages are clean, bright, and free from significant foxing or extraneous markings, preserving the integrity of the text and illustrations. Catalogue Note: This is the third impression, printed in January 1959, following the original publication in December 1957. The catalogue was produced by Whitbread & Co. Ltd. to document the remarkable collection of Sherlockiana housed in 'The Sherlock Holmes' public house on Northumberland Street, London. The collection itself largely originated from the celebrated 1951 Festival of Britain exhibition. The publication is richly illustrated with black-and-white photographs and includes introductory essays by A. Lloyd-Taylor and the renowned mystery author John Dickson Carr, alongside a 'Critical Miscellany' edited by H. Douglas Thomson. The striking purple covers were designed by Richard Lonsdale-Hands Associates, and the booklet was printed by W. S. Cowell Ltd. at the Butter Market in Ipswich. While earlier printings are occasionally seen on the market, copies of this specific 1959 third impression are uncommonly found, particularly those retaining tight, well-preserved internal pages despite the inherent fragility of the paper wrappers. Step into the gaslit world of 221B Baker Street with this fascinating vintage catalogue of the world-famous collection housed at 'The Sherlock Holmes' pub in London. Detailed within are the extraordinary artifacts, weapons, and ephemera associated with Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective, originally gathered for the 1951 Festival of Britain. Featuring introductory essays by true luminaries of the mystery genre, including John Dickson Carr, this illustrated guide is a charming and essential piece of history for any dedicated Sherlockian collector.
