Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First Edition; First Printing. An unblemished first Printing of the First Edition housed in a dust-jacket that has some scuffing to the rear, else also Fine; This book tells the story of the great English critic and philosopher, Walter Pater (1839-1894), and his relationship with the House of Macmillan, publishers of his most influential works. Pater was a brilliant and influential thinker, but he was also a highly self-critical individual. He found it difficult to gain recognition for his work, and he was often frustrated by the limitations of his own intellect. He was, however, enormously impressed by the Macmillan family, which he considered to be among the most distinguished in British society. He became close friends with the publisher John Macmillan and his wife, Flora, and he collaborated closely with them on a number of projects. The Macmillans were also generous friends to Pater, providing him with a living and supporting him financially throughout his life. The House of Macmillan is now known as Macmillan Publishers.; 8vo; 206 pages.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First Edition; First Printing. A first Printing of the First Edition in Nearly Fine condition with some bowing to the spine in a Fine dust-jacket; In 1916, British publisher Walter Pater published a book called The Book Beautiful. Pater was a critic and essayist who argued that art and literature should be designed to be beautiful, not simply to communicate ideas. The Book Beautiful was a success, and Pater was soon working with the House of Macmillan, one of the most prestigious publishing houses in the world. In this book, Seiler tells the story of Pater's relationship with the House of Macmillan and his book.; 8vo; 206 pages.

Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - The discussion of a nuntoer of questions concerning the problem of the foundation of statistical mechanics were proposed. A process of approaching to the state of statistical equilibrium was analyzed from a general point of view, for both classical and quantum dynamical systems. It is shown that the mixing property arising in ergodic theory is not necessary for statistical systems for any finite volume and number of particles. Of importance is only the appropriate behaviour of the limiting average values of the macroscopic quantities at t to infinity after the transition to the limit of statistical mechanics has been performed. So the fact that ergodic theory in its standard form is not sufficiently established. In order to explain this idea, some model systems were investigated, i.e. the problem of interaction of the particle with quantum field. The open mathematical questions in this field were announced and it was especially stressed that one has not succeeded yet in rigorous proving the properties of irany-particle systems which is required by the basic postulate of statistical mechanics.
