Tanto frente a la escatología judeo-cristiana como frente al racionalismo moderno adopta el autor una actitud de firme rechazo, ya que se siente comprometido a combatir aquellas concepciones religiosas y filosóficas que, según su criterio, paralizan el diálogo. La voz que aquí se alza aboga por una nueva apropiación de la herencia de los griegos, "a cuya profunda religiosidad faltaban totalmente los ingredientes de intolerancia y fanatismo que sobran a la nuestra". These advances are reflected by the publication of new editions of various important textbooks in recent years. In these publications classifica tion criteria differed. In contrast, the WHO classification has been relatively unaltered, and has introduced a limited number of new entities and subdivided others because of distinct histological features and biological be haviour. In general the framework and the concept of the original classifi cation, as it has been widely accepted, remains essentially unchanged. The classification is based on the line of histological differentiation, in many instances reflecting the type of intercellular matrix material produced. This approach is justified because it avoids theoretical his togenetic controversies.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - More than ten years have elapsed since the publication of the first edition of Tumors and Tumorlike Lesions of Bone and Joints in 1981. During this period significant progress has been made in diagnosis, and particularly in staging and treatment of bone tumors. In most centers, limb-sparing surgery has replaced the more radical ablative surgery, with or without preoperative chemotherapy. This became possible due to the introduction and increased application of newer high-quality imaging techniques (CT and MRI) and in particular the use of new cytomorphologic methods of diagnosis, especially immunohisto chemistry. These advances in diagnosis and treatment have been reflected by the publication of new editions of several important text books, since their authors - pathologists, orthopedic surgeons, and radiologists - felt the necessity of updating their works in recent years. However, in these publications different criteria of classification were adopted. The number of cases compiled at the Latin American Registry of Bone Pathology increased from 4913 primary bone tumors and more than 1100 tumorlike lesions at the time of publication of the first edition of this book, to 5274 bone tumors and 1665 tumorlike lesions by the end of December 1985, when I finished my work as head of the Registry and occupied the positions of Professor of Orthopedic Pathology at St. Louis University Medical Center and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago.

Con anterioridad alcanzó a doctorarse en la Universidad de Viena, donde fue alumno de Karl Bühler y Moritz Schlick. En La Habana creó el Teatro Universitario y el Seminario de Arte Dramático. Invitado en 1947 como profesor visitante de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, se estableció en ésta, profesó en diversas materias humanísticas y contribuyó a la fundación de su Departamento de Filosofía, del que fue director.
