A detailed record of the site and history of Fort St. George, a fortress at the coastal city of Chennai, India, founded in 1639. It was the first English fortress in India and the construction of the fort provided the impetus for further settlements and trading activity. Written by Colonel Denys Whitehorn Reid, an officer in the British Army and the British Indian Army during the First and Second World Wars. With a foreword from Sir Arthur Oswald James Hope, a British politician, soldier and administrator. Illustrated by Ismena R. Warren, a British artist and illustrator. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with minor wear and light fading to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrapper is also smart with light wear and minor chipping. The odd small closed tear to the panel edges. Minor loss to the rear panel. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Minor age toning to the endpapers.
