Sewn into a cover of French-folded thick beige paper, large press device to the front printed in black, single-sheet order form with press device laid-in. Maynard and Bray founded the short-lived Raven Press after their departure from the Gregynog Press. This substantial first (and only?) list is scarce in our experience. Internally, half title, title in blue with black woodcut, [4], 41 pp, [1], [1] limitation, 25 wood engravings, (hand coloured by Maynard and Bray), chapter openings in pale blue, initial letters in red & paragraph marks in red, drawn with a quill by HW Bray, a little browning to gutter of fep and rep only, pd's have risen slightly. House in its original card slipcase, edges browned, title in white to red paper label. The text, freely collated by Ernest Rhys, is based upon the Latin Life by Rhygyfarch (1057-1099) & upon the later lives. Text: "[.] Our 'Lord Herbert of Cherbury' was issued in a limited edition of 300 copies at 4 guineas, and went out of print immediately after publication. I think however that you may still be able to obtain a copy through Mr. [J.] Kyrle Fletcher [added in Maynard's hand "of Newport Mon"] | We have a copy of Herbert's 'Life of King Henry VIII' which has not, to my knowledge, been reprinted since the 1649 edition, which you have. It is a fairly rare book, but is not unfortunately very valuable.".

An offprint of the December 1954 issue of the The Economic Journal, containing R.G. Hawtrey's article "Keynes and Supply Functions." A response to F.J. DeJong's article "Supply Functions in Keynesian Economics" from the March 1954 issue. Octavo, original wrappers. In very good condition. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Keynes spearheaded a revolution in economic thinking, challenging the ideas of neoclassical economics that held that free markets would, in the short to medium term, automatically provide full employment, as long as workers were flexible in their wage demands. He argued that aggregate demand (total spending in the economy) determined the overall level of economic activity, and that inadequate aggregate demand could lead to prolonged periods of high unemployment, and since wages and labor costs are rigid downwards the economy will not automatically rebound to full employment. Keynes advocated the use of fiscal and monetary policies to mitigate the adverse effects of economic recessions and depressions. He detailed these ideas in his magnum opus, The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, published in late 1936. By the late 1930s, leading Western economies had begun adopting Keynes's policy recommendations. Almost all capitalist governments had done so by the end of the two decades following Keynes's death in 1946.
