Numerous handsome vignettes, initials, head- and tail-pieces accompany the text. Pine is considered by some historians to have been the first black man made a mason in England. He was a member of the masonic lodge at Globe Tavern in 1725 (where his name was spelled 'Pyne') and we know that "Bro. John Pine engraved the annual List of Lodges from 1725 to 1741. ~~Printing and the Mind of Man (1963): "This edition of Horace was printed wholly from copper plates engraved by John Pine. The text was first set in type, and an impression from it on paper was transferred to the copper, which was then engraved, the decorations being added at the same time. A smart set of the works of Quintus Curtius, in John Brindley's handsome microscopic type. As bookseller and binder to Frederick, Prince of Wales, Brindley was entitled to to use the 'Feathers' on his title pages, as here. He began his series of Latin Classics in 1744, intending to rival the Elzevirs for small format and fineness of type, and probably would have gone on longer had he not died in 1759. His editor in this series was Usher Gagahan, an Irish philologist who was executed in 1749 for filing gold coins. (ESTC T144277; Graesse II, 312).

A large fine copy on good paper. First editon, first issue ("post est Caesar" in sted of "potest Caesar" on medal p. 108, vol II) with the first impressions. This beautiful work, said to be the finest illustrated English book of the 18th century, became a main inspiration for the art of bookillustration. "This edition is much esteemed by the curious. The text is ENGRAVED as well as the numerous and beautiful vignettes which accompany it: of these vignettes, the copies which contain the FIRST IMPRESSIONS are valuable and much sought after."
