Front board showcases a bold, exceptionally bright gilt presentation stamp from King Edward's Free Grammar School, Birmingham, dated 1867. The upper corner of the front marbled pastedown securely preserves the scarce, original Henry Wright, Stationer & Bookseller, New Street, Birmingham ticket. This provides full regional commercial provenance, mapping the book's specific route from Wright's New Street workshop directly to the historic grammar school. Spine features five heavy raised bands with intricate, brilliant gilt-tooled compartments and a contrasting black leather title label. CONDITION REPORT: A beautiful, characterful copy remaining in Very Good visual condition for library display. Gilt stamps on the cover and spine remain exceptionally bright and reflective. The calfskin shows generalized historical surface scuffs, minor edge thinning, and tiny handling scars, with a web of hairline aging cracks across the black title panel. Internally, the text block is clean and tightly held by the primary binding cords; the vibrant Turkish shell marbled endpapers show only isolated toning. Note on Structure: Both the front and rear inner paper hinges have cleanly split down the gutters. The boards remain fully anchored to the text block, though the inner paper joints are fragile and require supportive handling when reading.
