Die schönen Ledereinbände etwas berieben, die Kanten minimalen bestoßen, der vordere Deckel bei Band I mit einer kurzen, schmalen und flachen Fraßlinie (9x2 mm). Beide Bände am Rücken unten mit einem kleinen Bibliotheksaufkleber. Der rote Buchschnitt gering angestaubt und kaum fleckig. Die Spiegel leicht fleckig, angestaubt und gering gebräunt. Die Textseiten etwas, aber gleichmäßig, getönt, einige Blätter, papierbedingt, stärker gebräunt, ein Blatt (S. 23/ 24) seitlich fleckig oder Papierfehler(?), insgesamt aber alle Seiten sauber. Quintus Curtius Rufus was a 1st century Roman historian and scholar, whose Histories of Alexander Great gained popularity in the Middle Ages. The first printed edition was published in Venice between 1470-71 by Vindelinus Spirensis. Samuel Pitiscus (1637-1727) was a historian and classical scholar from the Netherlands.

11. Amsterdam, Anthoni Schoonenburg, 1730, in-8°, engraved title + typographical title (printed in red and black) + (12)nn pp + 298 pp + (14)(index) ; with 27 copper-engravings. ( engravings signed in the plate: J. van Viaenen ). Bound in contemporary vellum over boards, vellum with gilt decoration andf central arms on both covers. Traces of ties. The arms are unidentifiable because they are worn ( perhaps the binder applied not enough pressure ?). There is a worm gallery at pages 260-284 ; mostly in the blank inner margin and thus rarely affecting the text. Still a fine copy in a handsome binding. (See De Backer-Sommervogel Vol. VI col. 975-978. Pomey ( 1618 - 1673) first published this very popular work in Lyon in 1658. This Amsterdam edition from 1730 is the first in the reworked version of Pitiscus. It was reprinted 6 times until 1741.

T., etw. fleckig, tlw. etw. stockfleckig. - Rufus verfasste die hier vorliegende "Geschichte Alexanders des Großen" (Historiae Alexandri Magni), von der die ersten beiden Bücher verloren gegangen sind. Auch Teile der Bücher 5, 6 und 10 fehlen. Das Werk ist stark auf die Person Alexanders ausgerichtet, ist dramatisierend und ähnelt teilweise einem Roman. Jedenfalls ist das Werk stark rhetorisierend. Zahlreiche Reden, die ein Problem von mehreren Seiten beleuchten sollen, werden den Protagonisten von Curtius in den Mund gelegt. Als Quelle ist es dennoch von einem gewissen Wert: in der neueren Forschung wird ihm sogar wieder mehr Gewicht zugemessen, wenngleich er den "objektiven" Alexanderhistoriker Arrian nicht ersetzen kann.
