A view of the entrance to Longwood, once the final residence of the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte. Perry's squadron called at St. Helena in January, 1853 the crew visiting Longwood " In viewing the miserable building, where for more than five years, this extraordinary man resided. it is difficult to suppress a deep feeling of the instability of earthly glory." (Narrative, Volume 1).

Madeira was the first stop for Perry's expedition after embarking on his first visit to Japan: the squadron appearing as dots on the distant harbour. There they re-fuelled and re-provisioned, the serene bucolic scene captured by the Wiliam Heine the expedition's artist.
