Landscape card, 7.5 x 11.5 cm. Designed to show off the firm's capabilities, and printed on one side in purple, green, light brown and gold, with fancy lettering within florally-decorated body and border, around a small central illustration of three men working a press. Printers' details in small letters at foot, reading 'F. Bentley & Co. Lth' and 'Shoe Lane, London.' The almanac on the reverse is a more restrained affair, stylishly printed in purple and gold. Fair: lightly-aged, with small closed hole to one corner, and slight wear at foot of almanac. Central image clear and undamaged. Harrild was uncle of the novelist Richard Jefferies. Frederick was the brother of Richard Bentley, publisher, and Samuel Bentley, printer. See Image.

Image colors fresh and rich with no foxing.FIRST OCTAVO EDITION of Audubon's final great work, with the plates in fresh colors. The work was the result of Audubon's collaboration with John Bachman, a Lutheran Pastor who had studied quadrupeds from his youth and who was recognised as an authority in the United States. The two began their association when Audubon stayed with Bachman and his family in Charleston for a month in 1831. Audubon knew that Bachman's contribution was critical but had to fight hard to convince his friend to take part. Bachman eventually relented, with the proviso that all profits, and expenses, were to be the Audubons: the work was expected to show a healthy return and he was eager to benefit his sons-in-law Victor and John Woodhouse Audubon.In 1898 Charles E. Lauriat (1842-1920) decided to became a bookseller only and leave the publishing to his former partner Dana Estes. So their partnership was dissolved. Dana Estes continued to publish books as Dana Estes and Company. Lauriat bought out the stock of Estes and Lauriat and on June 1, 1898 started his retail establishment at 301 Washington Street, Opposite "Old South". He sold the Estes books as well as the books of other publishers He moved to larger quarters in 1906 just down the way at 385 Washington Street. Boston He remained as president of this company until his death.

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Text printed in red and black with very elaborate chromolithographic borders in grey, green, red, white, yellow and much gold. Attractive (and large) floral headpiece. One or two very light spots at extremities, but in general in excellent condition. Something of a tour-de-force from this well-known firm and, of its kind, a delightful piece. A good deal of ingenuity has been shown in making almost every day an anniversay. Today, (16.xi, Battle of Lutzen, 1832) is not as interesting as some.

It was an impressive, and intended, show of force, not lost on the Japanese hosts. The view depicts the Shureimon Gate: shurei meaning "observing manners" or courtesy: a highly symbolic image prepared for the official account by Perry & Hawks, "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.".

Heine's composition records interaction between members of the expedition and the local population. "Vandalia" Bluff, was named for one of Perry's squadron, hinting at the gunboat diplomacy employed to gain access to Japanese ports. The sloop Vandalia was present at Commodore Perry's entrance into Tokyo Bay on 13 February 1854, and in 1855 was employed to protect American interests in China during the Taiping Rebellion.
