In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879. Perry's Narrative goes into considerable detail about these views: ?Picturesque crags studded the hillside?Over it towered a tall crag, rent through the centre and surmounted with a square rock, like a ruined tower [and] on a spot commanding a fine view of the bay, [we] found a handsome Cunq-qua, in an enclosure planted with trees. A dignitary of some kind welcomed us, and we were plied with small cups of excellent tea?.
