Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 2nd Edition, Illustrated Edition. 309 pages. All 11 plates bound throughout the text are present as listed on the illustration page, see images. The book condenses the massive, multi-volume official U.S. government report compiled by Reverend Francis L. Hawks under Commodore Matthew C. Perry's supervision. It was tailored specifically to satisfy intense Victorian curiosity surrounding Japan's sudden re-entry onto the global stage. Illustrations Wilhelm Heine: A German-born painter and draftsperson who accompanied the Perry Expedition. His highly detailed field sketches, watercolours, and drawings documented Japanese landscapes, people, architecture, and historic diplomatic encounters. Eliphalet Brown Jr.: The expedition's official daguerreotypist. He captured early photographs of Japan during the journey. Many of his pioneering daguerreotypes were used alongside Heine's sketches as the baseline templates for the book's final woodcuts and plate engravings. All images are photographed in natural light, no lights used to enhance colour or diminish shadows. Registered postage. Tracking details will be forwarded to the purchaser. Wilhelm Heine, Eliphalet Brown Jr. (illustrator).

Tinted lithograph 15.3 x 22.4 cm, 22.4 x 28.6 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, one corner stained, lower edge creased and a little ragged, but the image in very good condition. A view from "from Nature" by Wilhelm Heine, with figures after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Madeira was the first stop for Perry's expedition after embarking on his first visit to Japan: the squadron appearing as dots on the distant harbour. There they re-fuelled and re-provisioned, this serene and charming scene captured by the Wiliam Heine the expedition's artist. Perry's squadron is depicted at anchor in the background.

A pair of views drawn on the spot, " From nature" by Wilhelm Heine, with figures after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown, prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Heine and Brown, the artists, may be seen conferring in the middle ground of one view. The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879. Perry's Narrative goes into considerable detail about these views: ?Picturesque crags studded the hillside?Over it towered a tall crag, rent through the centre and surmounted with a square rock, like a ruined tower [and] on a spot commanding a fine view of the bay, [we] found a handsome Cunq-qua, in an enclosure planted with trees. A dignitary of some kind welcomed us, and we were plied with small cups of excellent tea?.
