The book condenses the massive, multi-volume official U.S. government report compiled by Reverend Francis L. Hawks under Commodore Matthew C. Perry's supervision. It was tailored specifically to satisfy intense Victorian curiosity surrounding Japan's sudden re-entry onto the global stage. Illustrations Wilhelm Heine: A German-born painter and draftsperson who accompanied the Perry Expedition. His highly detailed field sketches, watercolours, and drawings documented Japanese landscapes, people, architecture, and historic diplomatic encounters. Eliphalet Brown Jr.: The expedition's official daguerreotypist. He captured early photographs of Japan during the journey.
