Contemporary full red crushed morocco decorated and lettered gilt on spine and cover all edges gilt bound by Douglass, Blackburn. Contemporary inscription on preliminary. An account of Greece aimed at the young and divided into four parts. A general description that covers subjects such as topography, deities, oracles, games and combats, is followed by a history of the civil government, the military government and the private life of the Greeks. The contents page only lists Part I and Part II. Large damp-stain affecting preliminaries, title-page and preface, very occasional foxing, extremities rubbed, spine creased, a few scuffs and marks to covers else sound VG.

Two unusual items both printed in Latin. Provenance: Griffin is Philip Griffin, the eighteenth-century Oxford poet of St. Edmund Hall in the University of Oxford, the author of Juvenile Poems on Several Occasions (Oxford: Printed for Daniel Prince, [1764]). He was later Rector of Runwell, then Rector of Warnford, being the incumbent at the latter till at least 1788.
100 photogravures légendées reliées en 2 volumes de 245x315 mm environ, montées sur onglet, sans date (fin XIXe), A. Le Vasseur & Cie Editeurs, dans une demi reliure en chagrin vert foncé, dos à nerfs portant le titre "Estampes modernes", et tomaisons dorés. Petits frottements sur les nerfs les coins et les coupes. Nombreux onglets fendus sans que cela porte atteinte aux photogravures autrement qu'un coin un peu corné pour certaines d'entre elles. Bon état pour le reste.

Forme contratte e tachigrafiche al titolo, iniziali e piccoli fregi xilografici. Carta uniformemente brunita, lievi fioriture diffuse. Restauro al margine interno delle carte A4 e B1 della terza parte. Piena pergamena coeva con titolo manoscritto al dorso. Tagli colorati. A tratti brunito.
