The last edition, published nine years after the fourth edition of 1776. By this time, presumably, the joke was beginning to wear off, and it is notable that… now Kearsly's shop was at the sign of 'Johnson's Head' the author of the Journey to the Western Islands (who had died in December 1784) was now one of the greats, and not just a vehicle for a tease.

Second edition: first published in August 1774. This is a brisk and amusing satire on Charles Burney's musical tours of the continent, not always personal and s…ometimes rather crude. Burney was very much hurt by the parody, and even contemplated abandoning his History of Music, although his friends attempted to comfort him by suggesting that it was a tribute to his rising fame. The work is variously attributed to John Bicknell, George Veal, Thomas Day and others.

'Third edition', but in fact a reissue of the second edition, with an added Appendix, allegedly by Joel Collier's cousin Nat, telling of the supposed author's last days. There are several ref…erences to Burney himself, and one to Johnson, whose Journey to the Western Isles of Scotland had just been published. Planning a tour of churches to see their organs, Collier 'was not without hopes that the pious Dr. Samuel Johnson might be prevailed upon to accompany him', having observed that the gilding on many organs had been scratched off by charity children. 'And although he was not so uncharitable as to wish, (in imitation of that great traveller to the Western Isles,) that the little pilferers might have no dinner 'till they had ate the denuded pieces, yet he treated the contemptible philosophy of the age, which winked at such impious practices, with as much poignancy and severity' (pp. 13-14 of the Appendix). The appendix was also issued separately, with its own title page, but ESTC locates only one copy in that state, at the Bodleian. This edition is also rare, with just nine copies located (two at the BL, Cambridge, NLS and Reading UL in the UK; and Duke, Harvard, NYPL and Illinois in the US).
