The series' two hour premiere was released as a made-for-TV movie and released theatrically in March 1979. The twentieth century astronaut Buck Rogers emerges out of 500 years of suspended animation in the twenty-fifth century and becomes Earth's greatest hero. In this episode, Princess Ardala threatens to bombard Earth with a powerful alien weapon unless Buck is turned over to her and becomes her spouse.
