Uncertainties also play a role. This volume addresses such problems by using tools from chaos theory and systems theory, adapted for the analysis of problems in the environmental sciences. Sensitive dependence on the initial state (chaos) and the parameters are analyzed using methods such as Lyapunov exponents and Monte Carlo simulation. Uncertainty in the structure and the values of parameters of a model is studied in relation to processes that depend on the environmental conditions. Gebonden in bedrukte linnen band met stofomslag. 23 x 29 cm, 528 pp. Goed aantrekkelijk exemplaar l e geschiedenis van de Pieterskerk in Leiden begint in 1121 met de bouw van een kapel in opdracht van de graven van Holland. Uit deze kapel ontwikkelde zich de belangrijkste parochiekerk van de stad. Omstreeks 1390 werd een begin gemaakt met de bouw van een nieuwe Sint Pieter. Tegen het midden van de 16de eeuw werden de bouwcampagnes afgesloten. Tijdens al deze bouwwerkzaamheden functioneerde de Pieterskerk volop in het religieuze en sociale leven. Vanaf het laatste kwart van de 16de eeuw veranderde er veel, maar de betekenis bleef onverminderd groot. Behalve als stedelijke 'Hooftkerck' van Leidse protestanten, diende het gebouw de nog jonge universiteit, als Grootst Auditorium en als mausoleum. De middeleeuwse aankleding en inrichting zijn gaandeweg goeddeels verwijderd. Aan wat hiervoor in de plaats kwam ? het meubilair, nieuw gebrandschilderd glas, de zerken, epitafen, rouw- en gildeborden ? zijn ook weer talloze verhalen verbonden. In de voorbije jaren is er veel onderzoek gedaan naar de Leidse Pieterskerk. Bovendien is de restauratie van de kerk in het vorige decennium intensief door bouwhistorisch onderzoek begeleid. Dat de kerk in de steigers stond, heeft het mogelijk gemaakt om op anders onbereikbare plaatsen te kijken. Deskundigen van de Leidse universiteit, de bouwhistorici en architecten, de Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed en de Stichting Pieterskerk Leiden namen samen het initiatief tot deze nieuwe monografie. Het boek belicht de geschiedenis van het gebouw en het gebruik door zes eeuwen heen.
