Handbill, laid down, 190 x 260 mm. printed in red and blue. Active from 1830 - 1903, the firm's heyday is considered to have been between 1839 and 1882. They published a wide range of material including book illustrations and lithographic sheet music covers. Their best work was in the field of large chromolithographs for which they used a complex layering of tint stones, to produce work unique in colouration and tonal values to imitate water colour drawings.…

Original side stitched 13½'' x 10'' vintage paper sheet music comprising 7 pages of score plus the covers. Wonderful full-page colour lithograph front cover, rear cover in place. This was at one time bound in a larger collection but was originally published as a single piece, consequently some of thread to the stitching has worked loose, but still perfectly acceptable. Zustand: Fine. 33 x 25 cm. India paper on card. Macfarren began to study music when he was fourteen, under Charles Lucas. In 1829, at the age of sixteen, Macfarren entered the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied composition under Cipriani Potter as well as piano under William Henry Holmes and trombone with John Smithies. His ability to perform, however, was hindered by his poor eyesight and he soon concentrated upon composing only. In his first year at the Academy, Macfarren composed his first work, the Symphony in F Minor. From 1834 to 1836 Macfarren taught at the Academy without a professorship; he was appointed a professor in 1837. He succeeded Sterndale Bennett as principal of the Academy in 1876. He was also appointed professor of music at Cambridge University in 1875, again succeeding Bennett. Macfarren founded the Handel Society which attempted to produce a collected edition of the works of George Frideric Handel (between 1843 and 1858).…

Verdi's three-act opera "Luisa Miller," based on a play by Schiller, "Kabale und Liebe" (Love and Intrigue), was first performed at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in 1849. It appears to have been Verdi's first real success since "Ernani" and to have led up to that achieved by "Rigoletto" a year later, and to the successes of "Il Trovatore" and "La Traviata.".…

Chromolithographed map with decorative vignettes by Thomas Packer. 5 pages, small neat early owner's signature to the upper corner of the title, inner edge worn, margin toned and back wrapper creased, but the image in good condition. Highly decorative 19th Century music covers commemorating Turkey and attractive examples of chromolithography. The military theme reflected British support for the weakening Ottoman Empire, as a bulwark against competing territorial interests. This item is held off-site.
