Collated, complete.Sixteen pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.An engaging work of American history on the founding of New England, posed in three parts: "The Pilgrims in England", "The Exiles in Holland" and "The Settlement in America". Written by prominent British artist William Henry Bartlett, best known for his illustrative engravings and historical travel works. In blue full-morocco binding. Contemporary inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1854. Externally, generally smart with moderate bumping and rubbing, leading to visible loss of leather, especially to the joints, which are cracked but firm, and light marking to boards. Internally, hinges very marginally weak, leading to slight tension to the binding, namely between pages 104 and 105, otherwise text firmly bound. Rubbed spine ends and joints, corners heavily rubbed exposing board at lower front corner. Boards have moderate shelf wear, rubbed and soiled. Endpapers and prelims lightly tanned with foxing in places, bleed from boards to edges of front papers, hinge slightly strained to front. Internally foxing and tanning mainly to page margins throughout; intensity varies greatly, otherwise a neat, bright and tight volume. Zustand: Fine. 30 x 23 cm. Full colour lithograph. Small marginal tear repaired, otherwise very good condition. Henrietta "Jetty" Treffz was best known as the first wife of Johann Strauss II and a well-known mezzo-soprano, appearing in England in 1849 to great acclaim.

No Binding. Zustand: Good. 30 x 21 cm. Uncoloured lithograph by John Brandard (1812 1863), English lithographic artist. Sontag was born at Koblenz, Germany as Gertrude Walpurgis Sontag. She made her début at the age of 15. In 1823 she sang at Leipzig in Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz and in December of that year created the title role in his Euryanthe. Her success was immediate, and in 1824 she went to the Königstädter Theater, Berlin. In 1827, she was engaged at the Paris Italian Opera, and a year later married Count Carlo Rossi. She subsequently performed at all the major musical centres of Europe, and in 1852 visited the United States. She was hired by the Italian Opera in Mexico City, where on 17 May 1854, she intoned for the first time the words of the Mexican national anthem, written by poet Francisco González Bocanegra. One month later, she was stricken with cholera and died at the age of 48. Her last appearance, fourteen days before her death, was in the role of Desdemona of Rossini's Otello.…

Zustand: Fine. 25x20cm. Full hand colour. Excellent condition. Giacomo Meyerbeer was born on the Jewish date 6 Elul (September 5, 1791) in Vogelsdorf, Germany as Yaakov Liebmann Beer. His father, Judah Herz Beer was a wealthy sugar refiner in Germany and Italy. His mother, Malka Liebmann Meyer Wulff, also known as Amalia, was the daughter of Liebmann Meyer Wulff, a wealthy Berlin merchant and banker who made a fortune delivering supplies to Prussian troops, and was the director of the Prussian lottery. Jacob was first trained at the piano and became known as a child prodigy, one of the finest pianists in all of Berlin. He took training from great masters including Muzio Clementi. Later he studied composition and counterpoint with the Abbe Vogler in Darmstadt for several years; and it was there that he became friends with Carl Maria von Weber. By 1815, Jacob Beer had composed several oratorios and operas in German which showed promise. At the suggestion of Antonio Salieri, he made his way to Italy in order to develop the fine art of composing for the voice. By 1815, the composer, now calling himself Giacomo Meyerbeer, began to compose Italian operas and other musical works. Between 1815 and 1824, Meyerbeer composed six operas in the Rossini style, each more successful than the last, and he became a serious rival to Rossini. The last of these, entitled Il Crociato in Egitto, became an international sensation, and within a few years it was performed in all the major venues. It was the opera that brought Meyerbeer to Paris.…

Chromolithographed map with decorative vignettes by Thomas Packer. 5 pages, small neat early owner's signature to the upper corner of the title, inner edge worn, margin toned and back wrapper creased, but the image in good condition. Highly decorative 19th Century music covers commemorating Turkey and attractive examples of chromolithography. No Binding. Zustand: Fine. Each 30 x 24 cm. Two lithographs in vibrant original colour by John Brandard from a photo by Herbert Watkins, most probably inspired by the first performance in Italian at the Lyceum Theatre, London in 1857. Zerlina was played by the then famous soprano Angiolina Bosio and the title role by Italo Gardoni. Fra Diavolo's two robber companions were sung by Zalgar and Taglianco. Herbert Watkins was one of the most significant photographers in the nineteenth century but today remains largely unknown. Daniel François Esprit Auber (1782-1871) was a French composer. Fra Diavolo, was his most successful opera.…
