Geoffrey Wales (1912 -1990) was born in Margate, Kent and he studied at Thanet Art School and then at the Royal College of Art (RCA) from 1933-37. It was at the RCA that Wales discovered a love of wood engraving, inspired by his tutors Edward Bawden and John Nash. He is known for his printmaking but during the 1960s he also made collages; small, carefully crafted works using his own printed papers. They explore form, texture and tone in abstract compositions reflecting the landscapes and coastal subjects that inspired him. (Printmakers Council).

Engravings made in 1938 for an edition of George Eliot's work; commissioned by Paul Elek, but never published.

37/49 COPIES (from an overall edition of 60) signed by the artist, text from Walbaum type, numerous woodcuts printed from the original blocks, many full-page and in colour, a few on contrasting paper stock, pp. 88 [vi], original mauve cloth, boards printed with repeated block design in stripes of green and red, publisher's grey card slipcase, fine. An extraordinary, beautifully printed edition from Hans van Eijk capturing the vibrant, often totemic qualities of Graham's illustrations, despite the fact that many of the original blocks were 'cracked, warped and worm-eaten.'
