He received an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Cambridge University in 1938 and another in history and diplomacy from the University of San Carlos of Guatemala in 1947. [He served] in the Office of Strategic Services, a forerunner to the CIA, during World War II. He was an arbitrator and mediator for the American Arbitration Association."
